Fan Fiction about a small unit of Iron Grenadier Commandos on an assault.
MARS-ART Project Chapter 2: Echo Mission By: Chris Roberts “This is Echo Actual, I am on the ground. Where my bird is located, is now Echo Base. Charlie, place your heavies on my East side perimeter, then assist Able to pull back inside that perimeter! Dog, full suppression on building #3, while Baker swings South and flanks!” “Echo this is Charlie One-One, we are on the move with wounded.” “Dog is hitting that door with everything we got and that door is not coming down.” “Damn it, Dog, if my boots are on the ground and there is this much shooting, then you are losing the initiative! Now take it back!” -- Two Days Prior; Briefing Room; Scotland-- “At ease. Most of you blokes know me, but for the couple of you new to your teams, I am Warrant Officer McHardy. I am the Operations Sergeant for this mission and as previously designated by Laird Destro, the sixteen of you are my assets inside the ART Project. As the Warning Order from yesterday told you, we finish prepping today, transport is tomorrow afternoon enroute to Africa, and ready to launch operation no-later-than 0500. All of you Team Leader Sergeants have worked together before on previous missions. And as same, for this mission we will have Anvil Team Able, Anvil Team Baker, Assault Team Charlie, Assault Team Dog, and as usual I am call sign Echo. From S-2, Agent Foxtrot will infiltrate in advance and relay intelligence to Echo Main at the start of the operation. We will also have Captain Len’s quartet of AGP’s with us briefly and they will initiate contact. This mission is an assault. We will eliminate hostiles, we will gather intel, then we demolish any functional hardware before extracting. The plan is to be in and out. The target is a compound of militants that have acquired weapons from Darklon and we must not let them keep those items. Other than a few new tech pieces they’ve recently acquired, it’s the standard mercenary and terrorist armaments of AK’s, HK G3’s, RPG’s, and some machine-guns. The terrain is going to be African desert scrub with rocky hills and dry ground, but temperature is not going to be bad. Three days ago, Charlie team did a low-tech recon on a report of Darklon moving some equipment to a buyer. Fortunately for Laird Destro, the G.I. Joe team destroyed a significant portion of the buyer’s and the seller’s forces. The bad news is, one of the members of Charlie Team is in critical condition. We don’t know what this terrorist unit was able to get from Darklon, but we were able to track three survivors with a pair of crates to two remote militarized camps in a secluded western part of Algeria. We will be attacking this southern compound,” indicating the location on a map. “At 0550, the AGPs initiate attack. Missiles are for hard target defenses, and cannons are for mobile targets of opportunities. At 0552 the AGP’s will be getting low on ammo and will establish aerial perimeter for the inbound helos as they drop their troops. Able team will hit here on the North edge of the compound.” WO McHardy points to a satellite image on the large wall monitor in the briefing room. He then points to a second location on that image which shows an aerial view of three buildings, the ruins of possibly another building, and what appears to be either tents or storage areas under tarps and camo netting. “Baker team will hit here on the West edge. This will be a short “anvil” drop for you guys of about 20 to 30 feet.” The Iron Anvil soldiers have specialized uniforms and equipment, that along with their training makes them capable of jumping from low-flying helicopters or planes without parachutes nor ropes, providing a rapidly deployed force that surprises their opponent as they hit the ground like an anvil. “As Able and Baker teams secure those two sectors, two minutes behind them will be wave two. Assault Team Charlie will land behind Able and move forward to the building marked one. When Assault Team Dog comes in behind Baker and clears building number two, Baker you hit these tents on the South. At no later than 0555, all four teams are to be on the ground, the four AGPs will exit to the West, then move back to our staging area in the hills to the Northwest, followed by the four “little birds” (helicopters) that dropped off the teams trailing behind. Three minutes after, I will arrive with the two “big birds” (transport helicopters) and land in this vicinity on the Northwest corner. I will establish Echo Base, and by that point you four Sergeants will have had five minutes to converge, clear all three small buildings, and then we will gather intelligence. I am stressing that this is a rapid assault operation. Also remember, Agent Foxtrot will be joining us at the compound at this point and will be coming in from outside the perimeter, so remember your trigger discipline.” McHardy gestures to the red-headed female from the Intelligence department that has been standing along the side of the room. “For you three new grunts that recently joined us, this is not a dig-in, defensive-type of mission. If we get counter-attacked, lay down covering fire, and we pull back to the birds in order; Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog. This is just like in the movie, if Echo Base gets hit, we load up our personnel, and we get out of that desolate area. The only other friendly forces in the immediate area, will be another unit twenty-five miles to the North, closer to the coast. The First DEMON Company of tanks supported by Annihilators and Infantry will be assaulting another larger compound of this same faction at exactly 0550 that same morning. We are literally the echo of their attack on the primary compound, but we will not be able to support each other in a rapid manner. In the event of escape and evasion, move West then North, traversing the edge of the mountains to the coast. We do not yet know anything about these militants, could be a new terrorist group, but they have two armed encampments that lead us to think they are more than just gun-running mercenaries having a camping trip, thus the need for us to gather intel on site. Iron Grenadiers, this mission may not be a cake walk, but you are all professional soldiers, and I have no doubt that you will make Laird Destro and General Mayhem proud.” --Two days later— The air assault force was impressive taking off from the staging area, but was difficult to see as the glow of the sun was just coming over the horizon. While MARS Industries manufactures highly-advanced, experimental weaponry, the six helicopters that took off were unmodified versions of other company’s aircraft. It was comprised of four MH-6 Little Birds, that are commonly used by United States Special Operations personnel but now each carrying one team of four Iron Grenadier Commando troops, and those aircrafts are painted black and stripped of all identifying marks. Then two Sikorsky medium transport helicopters are following behind at a slower pace that contain Operations Sergeant McHardy and his S-3 operations assistant, Corporal Jager. The AGP assault goes off like a textbook attack. The four Anti-Gravity Pods (AGPs), look like black capsules with red jet engines on the sides, twin cannons on the front, and two missiles on each side mounted on stubby wings. They zoom in over the dry desert hills at breakneck speed towards the terrorist compound with the rising sun behind them, then rapidly decelerate to fire missiles at the two anti-aircraft Surface-to-Air missile launchers, and the sandbag encircled machine gun turret next, then just as rapidly accelerate and peel off in pairs to the sides. With the three anti-air emplacements destroyed they circle for a second and third pass firing their large bore cannons at targets, but they do not slow down on approach as individuals are scurrying about firing assault rifles at them and an occasional rocket-propelled grenade flies through the air. The occupants of the compound are stirring about trying to find cover while hollers of alarm mixed with screams of pain blanket the area. A couple of tents on the south side of the compound are on fire, and bodies lay scattered about the tent area, as the cannon fire from the AGPs impact like small grenades going off through the area. With chaos gripping the compound, the first pair of small round black helicopters approach the location from the still dark hills to the North. The four Iron Anvil special operator soldiers of Able team drop twenty feet from their helicopter and hit the hard-packed desert floor with four thumps. The two terrorists standing a mere six feet away, both with AK’s pointed up in the air shooting at the small helicopter that just buzzed their compound don’t even have time to react before single shots to the head knock them to the ground. A football length away, Baker team impacts and starts moving forward. “Able One-One and One-Two, spray that window,” the team leader for Able team, Sergeant Kar, known as radio callsign Able One-Zero, directs his team to suppressive fire as he and the fourth member of the team fire upon anyone that comes out the door of target building #1. “Mayday, AGP is going down. AGP is going down!” “Scatter! Able move!” The four Iron Anvils look up to see an Anti-Gravity Pod assault aircraft trailing smoke and coming in at an angle towards them. They leap and run out of the way, barely missed as the AGP aircraft skids and slams to a halt against a rubble stone wall. As they move to converge on the crash site, enemy bullets spray out of the target building they had been suppressing, catching one of the Anvils in the right side. A round ricochets off his armored shoulder pad, one impacts the Kevlar vest, but a third round hits above the elbow piercing his bicep. The wounded Anvil trooper stumbles and loses grip with his right hand but keeps moving towards concealment of the smoke trail coming from the crash site. A radio broadcast comes across all team channels, “this is Able One-Zero. All units be aware we have an AGP down, we have an AGP down. We are moving to secure the crash site that is near building #1.” As Able team shoots and moves forward a pair of terrorist circle behind building #1 and concealed in the smoke from one of the burning anti-aircraft gun positions, comes up on the opposing side of the wall ruins that the AGP is now pushed up against. As the wounded team member sits down on the ground at the back of the downed aircraft, the assistant Team Leader for Able, Sergeant Thorn, kneels besides him and without instruction starts wrapping a bandage around his arm tightly binding it to slow the bleeding bicep. The Team Leader for Assault Team Charlie radios the Team Leader for Anvil Team Able informing them they are able to land. “Able One-Zero, this is Charlie One-Zero we are about to land at designated LZ. If you can handle rescue operations, we will clear target one.” Although the small MH-6 helicopter sprays dust and sand everywhere as it quickly lands, before revving back up to lift back off, the flying debris has no effect on the Iron Grenadiers as all troopers have full face-shielded helmets. As their opponents see the sand cloud dissipate, two heavily armored Iron Grenadiers each with an automatic assault cannon, fire rounds that begin tearing through the metal door of the compound building labeled as target building #1. Staff Sergeant Z., Charlie’s Team Leader leads the assistant Team Leader, Sergeant Landis to the right and curves back in to face the door being pelted with large caliber machine gun rounds. “Charlie, One-Two and Three, cease fire. Cease fire.” As the heavy firing stops, the tall Polish-born Sergeant Z. charges the door and gives it a hard kick with the flat of his foot. The door flies open, held up by one hinge, Landis slips through the doorway and double-taps the two active hostiles inside. Moving to the side of the open doorway of the second of this two room structure, Landis pauses against the wall, until Sergeant Z. moves up behind him and taps him on the arm. The two move into the second room to find a wounded terrorist, who is quickly disarmed, zip-tied, and dragged outside by the two Sergeants. Their two teammates the heavy gunners, Corporal Shaw and newest team member Corporal Hart known as radio callsigns Charlie One-Two and Charlie One-Three, are waiting outside watching their counterpart team of Assault Team Dog clear target building #2. Just then bullets from an AK-47 hits Charlie One-Three in the back, but all the rounds impact on his backpack that is a giant ammo can for his hand-carried cannon. The bullets came from the ruined wall sections North of target building #1, and two of the Iron Anvils of Able team come around the side of the crashed AGP, to engage two hostiles at the ruined walls. The pilot of the AGP is crawling out of the crashed aircraft and is hit by an AK round as Able One-Zero fires a short burst from his weapon into one of the hostiles. The second hostile takes cover behind the stone wall. Assault Team Charlie, having cleared target building #1 move to cover Anvil Team Able. “Able, this is Charlie One-One on Ops comms. Take care of the pilot, we are moving to engage.” The two Sergeants of Charlie team in the lighter assault Iron Grenadier uniform sprint forward diagonally, leaving line of sight for the two heavier armored heavy gunners of their team to unleash their automatic cannons. The ruined stone wall crumbles and splinters of old wood and stonework fly in all directions. The hostile trying to take cover behind that stone wall must be on the ground shaking, but he is smart enough to know his position is about to be overran, so he sends a grenade flying over the wall. The two Charlie Team Sergeants dive for cover, but even in the dry desert it is not completely flat and by lying flat to the ground nobody takes any shrapnel. As they get up to a knee and start to move forward again, nobody notices a second grenade that must have had its spoon released before being thrown, is now up in the air, and explodes before contacting ground, sending a rain of shrapnel down. Staff Sergeant Z. takes several pieces of metallic shrapnel in his right arm, while his ultra-light body armor protected his torso and legs. Sergeant Landis feels a sting in the back his right hand and the concussion blast knocks him off balance, but he keeps his forward momentum going enough that he reaches the outside wall of the ruins. The two heavy gunners were not distracted by the pair of grenades, and kept track of their teammates and cease fire. Sergeant Landis tosses a micro-grenade over the wall far enough that whoever is on the opposite side of that wall from him cannot toss it back over at him. Landis picks his sub-machine gun back up, and immediately after the small grenade pops, he charges through the gap in the ruins of the wall and as he sees a hostile in a black balaclava raise the barrel of an AK47 towards his head, he fires a three-round burst first, ending any struggle. After checking that there were no active hostiles at the ruins, Sergeant Landis sees that Able team is treating the aircraft pilot, and he sees that Charlie One-Two and One-Three have moved to where Staff Sergeant Z., Charlie One-Zero, is sitting up trying to pick shrapnel out of his forearm. Charlie One-Three, who they’ve nicknamed Hulk due to his preference for brute strength over finesse, reaches down and grabs Staff Sergeant Z. under his left arm picking him up to his feet one-handed. “Let’s go Sarge. Compound is almost clear, then we’ll get you bandaged.” Just then the Operations radio channel, or Ops Channel, opens for all troops can hear from their helmet earpieces, “Echo element is in-bound, we’ll be landing west of the crash site in 30-seconds.” Assault Team Charlie heads back to their target building, as sporadic fire continues from what appears to be an armored bunker building that was labeled in the briefings as target building #3, as well as a few assault rifle bullets and RPG explosions splatter across the compound from hostiles who ran from the tents and are now firing wildly from the far side of the desert compound. As the wind picks up and sand starts to spray everywhere, Charlie sees in the morning light an all-black Sikorsky medium-transport helicopter landing behind them a short distance away. The Operations Sergeant’s voice then comes across the comms, “This is Echo Actual, I am on the ground. Where my bird is located, is now Echo Base. Charlie, place your heavies on my East side perimeter, then assist Able to pull back inside that perimeter! Dog, full suppression on building #3, while Baker swings South and flanks!” “Echo this is Charlie One-One, we are on the move with wounded.” With the Team Leader wounded enough he can’t shoot accurately, Sergeant Landis lets Staff Sergeant Z. get himself to the extraction helicopter while he goes to assist Team Able get their wounded Iron Anvil and the AGP pilot moving away from the crash site that seems to be attracting the occasional bullet. Assault Team Dog is still firing their automatic cannons and throwing grenades at the door to the armored target building #3, but it is not breaking. Their Team Leader, Sergeant Weisz announces over the Ops Channel, “Dog is hitting that door with everything we got, and that door is not coming down.” “Damn it, Dog, if my boots are on the ground and there is this much shooting, then you are losing the initiative! Now take it back!” Warrant Officer McHardy surveys the results of the last five minutes of combat chaos. A pair of AK start firing at the helicopter from the top of a berm of sand East of the compound, but the two heavy gunners of Charlie Team lay down a blizzard of fire back at the area and no more shooting comes from that area. Warrant Officer McHardy doesn’t flinch, but turns his head to make sure there is no mechanical damage to his helicopter, before walking to Target Building #1 to start inspecting it for potential intelligence on this enemy. “Foxtrot, meet me at building one,” McHardy instructs over the Ops Comms.” “Roger. I’m fifty meters behind you.” Agent Foxtrot responds, and then she is surprisingly noticed by the other Iron Grenadiers as she has snuck out of the desert from somewhere to the West of the Compound. She slowly jogs up to WO McHardy’s side wearing a skin-tight matte black bodysuit, some grey tactical gear, a piece of camo net draped around her shoulders, and carrying a sniper rifle. The Operations Assistant Corporal wearing a regular Iron Grenadier uniform and carrying a long-range radio signal transmitter stands at the door of Target Building #1, as WO McHardy and Agent Foxtrot proceed inside. As Assault Team Dog maintains suppressive fire on the door of the West side of Target Building #3, the four Iron Anvils of Team Baker sneak up on the South side of the building. With extreme coordination and the confidence from previously drilling on this in training, Dog ceases fire just as two Iron Anvils slip around to the front to place multiple explosive charges all up and down the hinge side of the doorway and the other two teammembers of Baker step out to provide covering fire. The armored cover of a recessed gun-port slides open, and Baker’s Team Leader, Staff Sergeant Smith is ready and sprays a burst from his sub-machine gun at the opening. The cover slides shut, but groans can be heard from inside as it does. Baker Team moves for cover back around the side of the bunker building. The Ops channel clicks open again. “Fire in the hole. Dog, be ready for suppression in the opening. Three, two, one.” BOOM. A blinding flash is quickly covered by a cloud of dust and sand. But a second later, the four Iron Grenadiers of Team Dog pull their heads out from cover and shower the area behind the cloud where the reinforced door used to be with bullets. After a five second burst they all four cease fire. “Baker is moving”. Led by the paratrooper Staff Sergeant Smith, the four Iron Anvils storm through the opening and start clearing Target Building #3. The two heavy gunners of Team Dog move to the exterior of the building and provide security covering towards the South and East sides of the Compound while Dog One-Zero and Dog One-One head inside to support the room clearing in this larger multi-room bunker building. After a few minutes, Baker One-Zero announces the building is clear, and WO McHardy states he is enroute to that building. The Assistant Team Leaders, Able One-One, and Charlie One-One, have treated the three wounded troops, while Able One-Zero, Staff Sergeant Kar, has begun prepping Able Team and Charlie Team to load the extraction helicopter while they wait, providing security around the helicopter. After a few bursts of heavy machine gun fire from the hand-held cannons the heavy gunners are carrying, the last remnants of hostile fire ceases. After a full five minutes of Baker, Dog, and Foxtrot grabbing anything and everything that could provide information out of the buildings, WO McHardy orders the extraction just in case any reinforcements are out there or any hostiles that fled decide to go suicidal and rally for a counter-attack. Able and Charlie get the wounded AGP pilot loaded up and the two wounded Grenadiers on the first helicopter, while Echo and Foxtrot elements join them. The second Sikorsky helicopter lands a short distance away as the first helicopter ascends and Baker Team climbs aboard, followed by Dog providing final security at the site. All Iron Grenadier elements of Detachment Echo have left the assault site alive. While there may be evidence on the ground that could lead back to MARS Industries and Destro, the information gathered in those 15 minutes will be able to tell Destro’s Intelligence analysts who this new terrorist / mercenary faction is and what they are looking to do by acquiring higher technology weaponry.
