I don't know what spurred me into this exercise about a week ago, but I began to come up with a sort of joke/rip-off/homage to the G.I. Joe ARAH characters. Actually, I think I was driving and "Sea Legs" by The Shins was playing and I thought that would be a good name for a Shipwreck knock-off. It eventually evolved into this:
"Attached to the highly classified MSA (Mission Support Activity) and ISA (Intelligence Support Activity) organizations, the FOG (Field Operations Group) is a secret counter-activities reactionary force code-named ECHO (Elite Counter-Havoc Operations) Force under one of the lesser known command arms of JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command). Their proprietary mission is to collect information via all disciplines of intelligence gathering pertaining to the terrorist organization SCORPION (Secret Cabal Of Revolutionary Political Insurgents Overthrowing Nations) and carry out counter strike missions to thwart their objectives of infiltrating and destabilizing governments around the world. ECHO Force is structured into squads of roughly twelve members which are then further divided into six, four or two-person teams dependent upon specific mission parameters. Every squad has their own commander and each falls into a designated area of expertise, such as urban, jungle, arctic, naval, desert or cyber warfare. The command element for ECHO Force organizes missions and collects SCORPION-related intel gathered by outside sources, either through other governmental agencies or through cooperation with other countries." I haven't had the time to explore this beyond the framework of this idea and the goofy alternate code-names that follow. Some of the names are hit or miss, and as the idea developed from something to entertain myself with to something I might actually utilize, I anticipate going back and re-naming a few, and fleshing out the characters and their specialties, shoring up the numbers to even out the teams. And I've tried to keep track of code-names that might have already been used, but there's a lot of characters in the Joeverse, so hopefully I haven't re-used any existing names. And keep in mind, this is just something I literally spent a few sporadic hours on over the last week, so some might be pretty obvious, others a stretch. Anyway, I thought this might be something some of you might enjoy: Alpha Squad (1982 team) -Harrier (Hawk) -Big Iron (Steeler) -Burgundy (Scarlett) -Sure Fire (Grand Slam) -Gunner (Shooter) -Hunter (Stalker) -FUBAR (Snake Eyes) -Convoy (Clutch) -Short Wave (Breaker) -Flare (Flash) -Dash (Zap) -Motown (Rock'N Roll) -Hot Head (Short Fuze) -Scout (Grunt) Beta Squad (1983 team) -Hotshot (Ace) -Cactus Jack (Wild Bill) -Harpoon (Torpedo) -Sulfa (Doc) -Centerfold (Cover Girl) -Semper Fi (Gung Ho) -Humbug (Snow Job) -Geronimo (Airborne) -Land Mine (Tripwire) Gamma Squad (1984 team) -Earl (Duke) -Frigate (Cutter) -Scuttlebutt (Deep Six) -Thumper (Thunder) -Detour (Roadblock) -Harbinger (Recondo) -Totem (Spirit) -Bail Out (Ripcord) -Mad Dog (Mutt) -Napalm (Blowtorch) Delta Squad (1985 team - incomplete) -? (Flint) -Yard Arm (Keel Haul) -Madame ? (Lady Jaye) -Sea Legs (Shipwreck) -Roundhouse (Quick Kick) -Danger Zone (Footloose) -Drawbridge (Toolbooth) -? (Crankcase) -Grunge (Heavy Metal) -Tundra (Frostbite) -Evergreen (Everett M Green - Alpine) -Brisket (Barbecue) -Hazmat (Airtight) -Sandy (Dusty) -? (Bazooka) SCORPION Organization: -SCORPION Commander (Cobra Commander) -SCORPION Officer (Cobra Officer) -SCORPION Trooper (Cobra Trooper) -Manglord (Destro) -Colonel Butcher (Major Bludd) -STING Driver (HISS Driver) -Countess (Baroness) -Flash Bang (Firefly) -Deadweight (Scrap Iron) -Thunder Head (Storm Shadow) -Snakebite (Copperhead) -Iron Hand (Wild Weasel) -Rancor (Zartan) -SCORPION Driver (Cobra Driver) -Chop Shop (Buzzer) -Pipe Bomb (Torch) -Rabies (Ripper) -Red Sentinel (Crimson Guard) -? (Eels) -Snow Crab (Snow Serpent) -? (Tele Viper) -? (Lamprey) -Flotsam (Tomax) -Jetsam (Xamot)

I assumed the Jaye in Lady Jaye was for JOE so I'd say she'd be MADAME E (Echo), though that makes her sound like she runs a brothel. DAME E? MISS E?
Bazooka = Stovepipe (another nickname for the anti-tank weapon) or Boomstick would be funnier, but that's a term for a shotgun. Lamprey = Leech or Remora, or perhaps Waterbug since there should be some arthropod theme of SCORPION. Snow Serpent = Snow Crab |

Evil Dead.) I might use Stovepipe. Remora is a great name too. Snow Crab is great, and like I said above, I was looking for a crab/lobster theme for the aquatic forces and since Snow Serpents were previously Eels, that would work too. Will edit above.

I was also thinking of other comic book characters to lampoon, such as Dr. Venom, Scarface, Kwinn, etc. But in all likelihood, I have no idea if I will ever do anything with any of this. I've always been interested in the original pre-GI Joe ideas that Hama had, especially the Oktober Guard/Pravda Patrol designs, and this was also sort of another possible direction the Joe universe could have taken, or even alternate history designs (like the previously done WWII designs).

Flint could be Frizzen - it’s the other part of the flintlock that makes the spark.

You do have a few real joe code names but I thought it was a great concept and list. I picture these as a Kmart series. Sure Fire and Mad Dog are taken. You need a term for Viper, to build on. CG, maybe Red Sentinel? Bazooka could be Rocket Man. Flint could be another type of rock too such as quartz or sand or flintstone.

I'm embarrassed that I didn't say how good the idea is before I made my suggestion. It's a great idea.
There aren't a lot of great alternatives to "viper" that haven't already been used for vehicles: Asp, Adder, Worm. "Wyrm" could work. "Makkor" is the word for "viper" in Uzbek - maybe that could work? |
