Chapter Six: Into the Breach
"I guess that's our goddamn diversion" Tom whooped, as the entire east end of the airport seemed to erupt into flame. Red and green tracer rounds buzzed in the air like angry bees. The rebels below sprang into confused action, shouting and running in all directions, with some just spraying unaimed fire in the direction of the maelstrom at the other end of the airport. "Guess so. Let's move!" John Eagle said, opening the roof hatch and motioning his men through. Tom was the first through, landing boots first on the head of a rebel guard who was covering the now screaming hostages with his grease gun. The rebel dropped and Tom rolled as his hit the ground. He righted himself into a crouch and fired two short bursts from his Uzi into the two guards who were just beginning to react to the noise in the room, turning their attention from the spectacle unfolding on the Tarmac outside the window. Despite his training on the weapon, he was always surprised how loud a silenced weapon was. None of the soft "poof" noise you heard on TV, but a muffled bang and the mechanical sound of the submachine gun's action cycling repeatedly. Hiro hit the ground next. Landing gracefully and twisting to fire his own weapon at the guard who was now coming through the banquet room's door from the hallway to investigate the noise. Han and John dropped in turn, with Han somehow combining the act of landing with putting his fighting knife through the neck of the rebel that Tom had incapacitated. "Clear!" Hiro shouted in accented English. John motioned for Tom and Han to secure the door and stood to address the hostages, all of whom sat in the middle of a carpeted floor strewn with blankets and empty food packages, looking like a large and involuntary slumber party. The prisoners, recovering from the shock of the explosion and the violence that has just played out in front of them, began to shout and plead in confusion. "Everybody calm down! We're Americans and we're here to rescue you! Everybody sit tight, we're just waiting for our ride!" The four six-wheeled armoured personnel carriers blasted past the seaport's gatehouse and onto the Avenida Bolivar. Civilian traffic swerved and stopped to avoid the APCs as they thundered across all six lanes of the highway and down the shallow embankment. The vehicles smashed through the chain link fence and onto the Tarmac at the end of the runway, headed towards the terminal at full speed. The guerilla had held his postion on top of the small cinder block pillbox the rebels had hastily erected just outside the main entrance to the terminal. He turned to his right, noticing the four pairs of headlights moving across the runway towards him. For a second he thought that they had been some of the jeeps that he knew to be part of the force that held the airport, but the twinkling lights that had appeared above the vehicles were soon followed by the reports of heavy machine gun fire and the angry hiss of bullets snapping past him. He shouted a warning and began firing his RPK at the approaching vehicles. His cinder block cover was not up to punishment delivered by .50 caliber bullets, however. One of the heavy slugs shattered a block right below the sandbag rest that his RPK bipod was perched on and continued on its path, now tumbling end over end. The round caught the guerrilla right at his left hip and tossed him back against the stack ammunition crates behind him. He had just enough time to wonder at the sight of his ruined leg before the darkness overtook him. The APCs raced towards the terminal at full speed, as the gunners poured .50 caliber fire towards anything that looked like a threat. Just as they reached the now ruined pill box, the formation shifted to single file and whipped around it, then applied their brakes, all four vehicles skidding sideways into a stop, now forming a graceful arc facing outwards from the terminal's main entrance. As the gunners laid down withering cover fire, the rear ramps of the vehicles slammed down and men ran from them as they fired into the airport's main lobby. "Listen up! We are ready to move!" John shouted to the cowering hostages. "We will move ahead of you to the escalators down to the lobby! Go down, out the door and into the vehicles waiting for you!" John Eagle threw open the banquet rooms double door, simultaneously firing a burst from his Uzi into a rebel waiting beyond it. The large group moved remarkable swiftly behind him to the escalators. Tom took the lead from there, sliding down the now still escalator's railing, to land in a crouch at the bottom. He shot another rebel, who was focused on the men firing into the lobby from outside, in the back and called "Corps! Coming out!" Two Corps troopers covered the inside of the lobby from the doors, while others now watched the Tarmac and hustled the hostages through then and into the waiting APCs. John and Tom got the last prisoner aboard, and as they drew up the vehicles ramp, the gunner fired a flare pistol into the air. The vehicles then began to roll. Sarge saw the red flare shoot up from the other end of the airport. He whistled at his teammates "Time to go!" He fired a last burst from his M-60 and dropped the weapon, unslinging his carbine as he and the others ran toward the shopping mall's fence. They slipped through the hole they had cut earlier and piled into their rusty white van. Thankfully the van's engine roared to life on the first try (that worry had been lingering at the back of Sarge's mind since they had set up their firing position earlier). He tore out of the parking lot at full speed, almost hitting a man who was trying to watch the chaos at the airport from the lot's edge, and then crumpled the fender of a VW with the vans rear end as he threw it into a hard right. The van sped down the boulevard to the intersection of Bolivar, blew the light and whipped into another hard right. At the port Sarge jumped the grassy media and cut across the oncoming traffic and through the port's main gate. He screeched to a halt near the gangplank, just in time to see the final APC roll off the ramp and into the ship's hold. Once they were safely out to sea, Ted Jones summoned all of his men and the hostages to the ship's forward hold. They had been amazed to find the compartment made into a banquet hall, complete with a crystal chandelier. Once the men had been assembled, Jones took up behind a small podium in the middle of the main table. "Men of the Corps!" He bellowed. "Tonight you have done a great deed! You have saved American lives and defeated your nation's enemy! But more importantly, you have shown the world what Americans, free of the indecision, inaction, cowardice, and corruption of those in Washington, can accomplish! We have shown the nation the way forward!" Jones produced a bottle of champagne from behind the podium. He twisted in a corkscrew and began to turn. "For America! And for the Corps!" The assembled men roared in unison as the spray of champagne glittered in the lights of the chandelier.

Great story, really enjoying it. I love the gritty realism you've injected into it.

Definitely reading this now.
Out of curiosity, actually growing up in Montana, and not a big city like Bozeman, we didn't have a lot of toy stores, did those vintage Corps figures have bios that inspired the backgrounds of the characters? |
