Tell me about it. I'm in the middle of helping design an articulation model for a start-up "boutique" toy firm and we're at 44 separate pieces for a hyper-articulated 1:18 scale figure and the estimated costs of production start going up exponentially with that many pieces.

Well, I don't want to talk too much about it since it's not really my project and I might end up disclosing things I'm not supposed to. Suffice it to say that the whole design is built around the idea of creating a 1:18 model that has the articulation of a Takara Microman figure but construction-wise, is as robust and sturdy as a modern GI Joe figure.
Heh. It's not going to be a mainstream product, though (at least not initially), as I don't think the production costs will allow it compete with mass-produced items. I'm trying to trace Hot Toys' (the Hong Kong based high-end toy manufacturing company) history and see how they managed to reach the top of the 1:6 market even though most of their items are priced way above what most people would consider as sane prices to pay for toys. |

I can't argue about the cost of toys. But I tend to stay away from those threads.. It's not something I know enough about, and one ususally doesn't win those arguements. Do I think the toys are overpriced? Sure and Hasbro execs have admitted to as much. But then again GIJOEs use to be $2.34 25 years ago, so it's all relative.
And debating is sort of a fun past time. Although I read through the debates and have seen where the substance is. I can think of a couple of Tankers who are grade A debaters. But I've seen with such threads as "Batman vs Snake-Eyes" or "I hate the ROC movie Thread" there is nothing I have worth adding. I use to be frequently posting to Yojoe, before the Tank took off. But it was sort of boring. Once I found the Filecard thread I was sort of hooked. But I also subscribe to this thread and Troy's JoeVerse since you both just crank out so much. I'm old enough to have my own opinions and too old to care if no one shares them. I'm a huge fanboy so I like just about everything, (except the SHARC with Deep-Six) |

My issue is that I'd much rather make it 1/18th, but I'm not sold on the money I can get in this scale being able to support the line. I might be moving up to 1/12th out of necessity. It's nice to see Hot Toys is the guideline for more than just myself, although spending their formative years in the East Asian collectors market is much more forgiving than trying the same in the North American market.
But yeah, the whole enterprise is predicated on the idea that there is an untapped market out there for high-detail/high quality mid to high end 1:18 designer toys (economic downturn notwithstanding) similar to what's sustaining the high-end 1:6 industry. Quote:
I was just sort of hoping, I guess, that with the new year and things like RoC and its affiliated toys now firmly in the rearview mirror, the community could move on and talk about other things but instead, a cursory sampling of recent threads and posts reveals just more of the same stereotypical "arrested adolescent" behaviour one sees in pop culture "geek" communities (primarily the sense of entitlement and misplaced righteous indignation). Maybe we need to send Hasbro a "Bill of Rights" that a group of tankers representing a certain sample can draft.
Like: a. Only two versions of Snake-Eyes a year. b. At least one previously unreleased ARAH figure per wave, in a "now and then" container. Until all figures from prior to ME articulation are done. That way purists are satisfied, but GIJoe can move away from the Neons and the Yellows. (Doesn't matter how long it takes just do one to three a year at least.) C. Fix the Filecards=OK that's just me |

You kidding? That's like half of Hasbro's Boys Toys Division profits right there

By the way, just so I don't end up derailing my own thread, I'm posting links to a couple of freeware PDF readers you can use when I eventually come out with the GIJOE reference bible that are excellent alternatives to Adobe Reader, which won the dubious distinction of being 2009's most exploited (by malware/hackers) software plug-in:
