I try not to rant (too much) on here, but I was wondering if any of you guys have ended up defending certain Joe-related things you don't even like (even if it's just in a conversation in your head) just because you don't want to be associated with all the negativity and the schadenfreude that seems to be so popular with the greater HISStank community?
I rarely venture out of four places on HISStank (the "What secrets lurk in the filecards?" thread, the Fan Art sub-forum, the music-related threads in the General Discussion sub-forum, and the Customs sub-forum) because every time I do it seems like every other thread/sub-forum is filled with grown men bitching and moaning about GI Joe toys, comics, cartoons, and the movie. The funny thing is, I thought the RoC movie (and the CG cartoon based on it) sucked, I'm indifferent (at best) to most of the toy designs it spawned, and I'm lukewarm to two of the three IDW titles currently being published but I almost (operative word being "almost") feel compelled to vocally and publicly defend them in the face of the specious arguments and vociferous fanboy rage directed against them. But yeah, I know, I know "welcome to the internet" and all that . |

I've been a member longer than most of you, but until Resolute came around, I'd nearly given up on the community. I was lucky that coincided with you starting up your project. I still lurk the "secrets" thread, but I don't really have much to add in the way that other guys can't. Beyond that, I look at the customs and art, just because luckily people keep their rudeness off of those boards.
And just let me say as an amateur toymaker, it's hilarious and pitiful to read the expectations of the buyers. For some reason, people think that since the Joes are small, they should be *much* cheaper than other figure lines. I hear more bitching about figure cost in Joe world than anywhere else. |

I'm a poster. Can't help it. I really get into it for threads like this and the filecard. Ones where can really dive into the stuff and get juicy. But I do feel compelled to deal with the numerous idiots that dot the landscape.
Some of the folks make me want to hit my head on the desk repeatedly and really stand out as the reason that adults collecting toys is looked weirdly on. I guess I'm secretly a debater. Stuff I'm passionate about, will just defend as I feel needed. I don't care if everyone shares my opinion or not. I just can't stand the people that are negative and bashing for no other reason then because they can be.

Oh, my pseudo-rant wasn't really directed at any one or anything in particular. Just an impression that even with the foofarah over Resolute and RoC and everything else that came out last year at an ebb, it seems like fans will always find something to argue about. On the one hand, it's nice that people are passionate about the GI Joe property. On the other, the vehemence that accompanies many of the opinions expressed here and elsewhere can be a little off-putting to me.

You should check out the MattyCollector forum. You haven't seen price-point bitching yet until you've been there (although I think many of the complaints there are justified, given the way the online store-only MOTUC and DCUC stuff are priced at ~$30 per figure once shipping is factored in).

I think it's a size perception thing. The common view is that smaller toy volume = lower price. But that relationship is valid only if the manufacturer scales down sculpt detail and reduces articulation. I've got a few Japanese 1:18 figures and they're not cheap at all (even if you take into account the fact that they're imports), because of the cost of the engineering that goes into making the articulation (which is better than anything Hasbro makes currently in 1:18) work at such a small scale.

Add to that the increased number of paint applications and it's no wonder Hasbro *needs* to increase the price. The Japanese stuff like Revoltech and Microman is upwards of 40 separate pieces per figure. The amount of plastic is such a marginal factor in the cost per figure.

Thank you.
I don't know how many times I've tried to explain to people that there are a ton of other costs associated with the price of the figures besides the "cents it costs to manufacture" (as so many people seem to think is the only thing that decides price and the rest is Hasbro being greedy. Yes, there is profit involved, but there's a lot of other stuff that falls under "cost of doing business".
