My early (only) suggestion as far as the Selkirk name would be "Shepherd". Selkirk originally meant "church in the forest" and the town is associated with "The Ettrick Shepherd" a local poet and writer and Walter Scott (the first English-language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime). Combine this with the image of the Scottish shepherd, the term's connotation in the church, and the "s" sound and it might be a match. Just throw in a secondary Chaplain's Assistant MOS (since I don't *think* Sokerk had one) and it all ties together.

Tercel, interestingly enough, originally comes from the Latin word for "one third", referencing the fact that this type of falcon's males are only a third of the size of the female falcons (it's also because of this meaning Toyota chose to name it's smallest subcompact Tercel, which was smaller than the Corolla).

EDIT: Digging further etymologically, the word "tercel" is also linked with the Old English "teors," which meant "penis"(!). There seems to be two primary sources for the word's origin, with one being the Latin tertius ("third") and the other being Old English teors ("male member"). Thus, we have tercel: male falcon hatched from every third egg and/or a third of the size of the female falcon. Last edited by zuludelta; 10-11-2009 at 11:55 AM.. |

So his name is "One Third Penis" now? Ouch. I wonder which loose-lipped female Joe gave him that nickname? ;)
On a related note, I think that when changing the names you should possibly shy away from using names that don't have a lot of meaning to English speakers. That's not some small-minded, selfish viewpoint either. It's just that sometimes getting too clever with the names goes counter to what's so neat about the Joes' codenames... they give an immediate impression of who the character is or what they do. Just a thought. |

I think he was supposed to come packaged with the Falcon Glider, but ended up being a single-carded figure prior to production. I've read that some versions of Sokerk did come with the the Falcon Glider (or the Flacon Glider came with a Sokerk figure), but haven't seena ny of those on yojoe.com. Anyway, I've taken "Soldado Halcon" to mean he's airborne-qualified.

"specializes in explosives, light armaments and can disassemble any firearm at the speed of light. He loves grenades and being in the heart of battle, as well as being impatient with an explosive temper." Perhaps you can use this, the fact that he's of Scottish descent along with the S-sound somehow? I think the falcon aspect is already covered with the airborne qualification, honestly. |

Hmmm... right now, I'm thinking of using "Slogger." It's a WWII-era term for an infantryman, and it's also a cricket term for an aggressive batsman. I don't think it's so obscure in the first sense that American English speakers are unfamiliar with it (or if they are, it's easy enough to get a sense of what it means from the root word "slog").
What do you think? |
