Wow, zulu! My wife loved the Greer image! She pushed me off the computer and set it as our desktop wallpaper! Thanks for letting me surprise her with that! She's willing to get you another picture if you're unhappy with the image, though. I can't really comment on it since I'm biased, so I'll move onto the other ones.
Cobra Commander looks about how I envisioned him, which is to say AWESOME. Kwinn is a great update and helps me to disassociate him with the "boy scout" look I had for him in my mind's eye. Serpentor. SERPENTOR. Dammit, man. Stop making me reverse my positions on characters I hate! Seriously. You're costing me money. The snakeskin is a fantastic choice, as is his overall color scheme. You actually have me looking forward to *Raptor* now. WTF? Ledger and Sharpe look pretty good, although I see what you mean about trying to find a decent Marine Class A service uniform picture. I wouldn't have thought it would have been so difficult, but I couldn't find one either. That's said, those two are kind of yawners for me as characters, so I'll probably continue to use Keel Haul as my XO and promote Jaye up to S2 in my world. Spigou really hit the nail on the head when he said "less is definitely more when it comes to these characters". The new designs are streamlined and slick. Nice work! |

Yeah. Weird. With pictures of just about anything and everything archived somewhere on-line, the paucity of USMC service uniform digital images is a bit of a surprise. Another thing I can't find enough clear digital images of on-line is the old khaki summer dress uniform the Army used between the 1950s and the mid-1980s. All the reference images I have are low-res scans from from old books. |

I guess I never thought about Kwinn being less menacing in shorts. I just thought he was cool at the time, no matter what he was wearing. But I do see your point. As far as figures are concerned, I haven't attempted any of the females yet. I may try to do Scarlett at some point, and i have some ideas on Mayday. I'm trying to do characters I like, but who need some major "tweaking" to look "real". Spirit, Lifeline, Deep Six, and Stretcher were the ones I wanted to work on. Next is BBQ, Airtight, Mayday.

New Stuff:
"Blitz" Krieger, Dr. Mindbender, Iron Claw Design notes: - "Blitz" Krieger is my take on the Sgt. Savage villain Gen. Blitz (seen here). I've outfitted him in the same charcoal and crimson uniform I used for Destro and the Baroness (the standard utility uniform I'll be using for higher-ranking Cobra personnel). I know the actual toy had a full beard and a scarred, milky white, blind left eye, but I went with the Joe Kubert card art for my primary reference (the card art featured Blitz with a wispy moustache and the scar on the right side of Krieger's face, and he had what looked like a normal pair of eyes) - Dr. Mindbender was based on the 2004 Valor vs. Venom design, the only version of the character who didn't look like a half-naked Pride Parade marshal. Instead of being a "master of mind control," I've re-imagined him as a former DENCOM dentist who's switched careers, going into Human Factors Psychology/Engineering Psychology, working for the CIA as a research scientist before going into the private sector as Cobra's Chief Technology Officer. - Iron Claw is my take on the GI Joe Extreme Villain Iron Klaw (I guess a deliberately mis-spelled code name was what made him extreme). I've re-made him as a descendant of the Moghul aristocracy in Pakistan (I've listed his alternative alias as "Aahanii Panjaa", which is Urdu for "Iron Claw" -- somebody correct me if I've adjectivized the word "aahan" wrong) a beneficiary of a privileged Western education, but who went back to his country to serve in the Army, where he gained valuable battlefield experience in numerous border skirmishes in Kashmir and counterinsurgency operations against fundamentalists. I imagine he might have met up with Destro or Cobra Commander (whom I've already remade as ex-military themselves) in a joint anti-terrorism exercise or other, and that he was given the opportunity to join Cobra as an executive after he'd served out his commission. Thanks man. Glad you're digging the details... I have almost as much fun researching and writing up their backgrounds as I do making the composite images (trying to look for a proper Urdu translation for "Iron Claw" was especially fun... led me to a number of very useful free online translation and transliteration services, not just for Urdu written in Arabic script, but for Russian, Ukrainian, Armenian and Belarusian words written in Cyrillic scripts as well).

Nice job as usual Zulu. Those look great. The DDP version of Mindbender was the only one I liked, for the same reason. I don't even want the 25th one because of how he looks.

Nice job as usual Zulu! I'm really enjoying your reinterpretations of Cobra. I'm very happy to see you embrace characters like Blitz and Iron Claw. I always thought Blitz had a bucket load of potential as a foil to the joes / screaming eagles. He's pretty much one of the linchpins characters in my joeverse.

z,
I love the way you've integrated all of the separate Joe continuities into one cohesive universe, to the point where it's getting harder for me to imagine them *not* being there. I generally like Claw's look, and I'm really digging his background. Expanding Cobra's borders, so to speak. That said, I would've like to have seen Claw's skull motif worked in there somehow. Blitz and Mindbender are perfect. |
