Thanks, Loose.
One unfortunate side-effect of a sort, I'm finding, of getting a new LCD monitor is that it's only now that I can see some of the contrast issues in the older images I've made. I always thought I did a pretty good job of correcting my monitor's gamma and synching up my copy of Photoshop 7 up with ICC profiles and whatnot. But the difference between a 17" CRT and a 26" LCD is like night and day. I'm seeing rendering artifacts I never even saw on my old monitor. I think I'll be spending the remainder of this month and the first half of October concentrating on colour corrections and updating the filecards I've already written to match up with the document I just posted.. |

Zulu, I just finished reading your doccument-or should I call it a magnum opus? Amazing stuff. Love how you incorporated all those obscure characters like Snake Eyes' buddies from 'Nam. Great stuff. Can't wait to see what you do next. Take a break-you've earned it!

I've been thinking of reformatting the filecards. As much as I love the original typewritten ones that came with the toys, apart from appealing to readers' sense of nostalgia, I don't see why I should stick with them. The typewritten fonts date the filecards to the pre-PC/Mac/home computer revolution era, they can be difficult to read in certain resolutions (the serifs get in the way), and a "realistic" typewriter font wouldn't support certain diacritical marks and foreign language characters.
I was thinking of using a similar format to the latter Valor vs. Venom figures: YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Dr. Link Talbot Nice, clean and readable modern sans serif font contrasted with a watermarked background. I've already got something similar going on with my October Guard (based on the filecards that came with the 2005 convention exclusive Oktober Guard) and Action Force filecards (based on the basic bio "sheets" that came with the original Palitoy Action force figures), so I was wondering if doing the same for the Joes and Cobras would be okay, or if it's a step too far in contemporizing them. |

You know my thoughts on this. I was in favor of it when you did it to the Action Force guys, and I'm in favor of it for the Joes. In my mind, these aren't filecards, they're files viewed on a computer or a pda type of device. How will you be using/organizing them in the bible? That also makes a difference in my mind.
PS: Thanks for the printer friendly document. I'm seeing more and more things I really like (Mangler, Cool Breeze, Ramon and Dickie, BF2000) and some pleasant surprises (Non-Ninja Force, Famous Dudes, Star Brigade). I think you've finally incorporated everyone in. Majorly impressive, bro. Last edited by Master Thespian; 09-29-2009 at 06:45 PM.. |

I might throw in Stanley (the female greenshirt RTO who appeared in an early issue of the Devil's Due comic) to replace one of the "less canon" entrants from the Bronze Bombers. I think I read somewhere that she was intended to be a nod to Stan Lee (not very imaginative code name if that was the purpose... they should have called her "Excelsior" or something more associated with Stan). |

Screenshot of the doc (click on the thumbnail for a slightly larger view):
I decided to ditch the old filecard format and go with a text-searchable (not rasterized) chart. Each unit-specific grouping of filecards will be preceded by an APP-6A standard diagram showing the subunit structure... the combination of the color-coded grouped filecards (according to sub-unit) -- and the APP-6A diagramming will hopefully give readers a full picture of the organization's manning and capabilities (and make the prior table I posted unnecessary). This thing is gonna be freaking huge. I'm estimating it'll be at least 150 pages for the GI Joe filecards alone. Throw in the diagrams and text pieces and it'll be 200 to 250 pages easy, clocking in at least 3 or 4 megabytes (and that's if I cheap out on the image resolution). I don't know if that's a reasonable size for a download. Might have to break it up into chapters. And yes, I'm sort of beginning to wonder if this is something a completely sane person would do. HAWT. I'm digging that Hawk update majorly (I meant to mention I love the promotion of Breaker to O-2. It lets him hold a prominent position, but still be a young guy).

No, it's not. But sane ≠ awesome. Last edited by Master Thespian; 09-30-2009 at 09:53 AM.. |
