The decision to go with that was partially influenced by the Iron Grenadiers name... the Ordnance Corps of many Western nations (including the US) have adopted the shell & flame as their insignia. Incidentally, the shell & flame is also the symbol associated with the UK's Grenadier Guards. So I sort of conflated the two (Ordnance duties + Grenadier name), and came up with an EOD role for the Iron Grenadiers. Same for a Marine Gunnery Sgt IIRC, which reflects their heritage of being qualified to man the Guns on a ship What I'm looking for is a name for the "generic" MARS weapons engineers (I've yet to make a manning requirements table for them). Ferret, Nullifier, and Annihilator don't sound right. I'm leaning towards using the "Iron Anvil" name (because it's suggestive of a weapons-making role and it's a nice counterpart to the Iron Grenadiers name) but the original Iron Anvil guys were airborne commandos, not armaments scientists. What do you think? That sounds pretty Good! The other ones are sort of lame you're right. The only other one would be the Wild Boars. Oh, right, totally forgot to answer your original question. Yeah, he probably knows. My impression of Firefly (form his original filecard and the comics) is that he's got a serious rep as a leading saboteur-for-hire, so his higher pay is a reflection of that. I'm just kidding. You figure CC has know Firefly longer as well as he was who he hired to kill Snake-Eyes. Plus Firefly's role is one that would require more skill, than say just another Bodyguard. And Firefly is just slightly cooler as well, but then again less loyal. Depends on what you're going to do with them. I think the RoC MARS/Iron Grenadiers figures are easier to work with if you're planning on modding them (fewer and more generic-looking paint apps). The Range-Viper figures look better "out-of-the-box," though, and you can never have enough 1:18 M60 machine guns. |

Today's post is brought to you by the letter "z"
Zanzibar & Zandar Design notes:
EDIT: Updated Zandar pic. Much happier with this current image. I think the crouched pose mitigates a lot of the "poofiness" (for lack of a better or more politically correct term) of having him shirtless. Changed the shoulderpads to a lorica manica style sleeve. Doesn't make sense for him to wear one, in my mind, but in this instance, I think having him look like the common notion of Zandar is more important than having his costume elements fit rationally. Wow they look great Zulu. These should be easy ones for Hasbro. I would love if Hasbro gave these guys the ROC makeover of POC or whatever it's called. At this point the Dreadnoks do not exist in the ROC or IDW stories, but are hugely popular characters. I just kind of wish they may find a way to incorporate them. Maybe less biker gang and more Pirate/kidnappers/Bounty Hunters.
I love the idea of Zandar but I outgrew his look long ago. But growing up the Dreadnoks got more playtime than just about anyone in my collection. I figured Zandar to be a Sniper of sorts, which I guess was his intention in a way as a counter to Lowlight. |

Not a fan of Zandar, but it's hard to make that character and make it look good when keeping close to the original. That toy was so bad...
LOVE ZANZIBAR!! That kicks major ass. One of the best.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.
Yeah, Zandar was a bit of a beast to work on... even as a kid, I never really liked his costume, so it was difficult "convincing" myself to keep true to its major elements. The image has grown on me, though. |

Nice stuff, z.
VIPERS: Stop making my jaw drop all the time, you asshole. Credible, recognizable, with that special "something". This lineup looks cohesive and yet still individualized. I would love to have any of your redesigns in plastic form, but would LOVE to have these VIPERS. *swoon* I still think you should call the grenadier FRAG-VIPER. Z-'Noks: Zanzibar is truly incredible. He looks over-the-top and realistic at the same time. Zandar... not so much. I'd really hoped you would have updated him more, or at the very least thrown a shirt on a guy who is going to be crawling around doing recon work (and he still would have been recognizable due to the facepaint, headband, neckerchief and sleeve, IMO). Hell, you even gave Gung Ho a shirt and we could still tell who he is (and giving him a shirt covers his boss Corps tattoo). I can see Zandar will be your COBRA version of Ace in that you will probably keep revisiting him. Speaking of Ace, the updated image looks better, but it looks like you used a different (chubbier) headshot of the actor this time around, not to mention lighter tinted glasses. Maybe next time? Ace really is a thorn in your side, isn't he? Screaming Eagles: I love seeing more Joes incorporated than anyone could have possibly imagined when you started (it's getting easier to think of Joes who won't be there now instead of vice versa). I honestly think this is the most comprehensive attempt to unify all of the disseparate Joe continuities into one working whole. D-Day and Headbanger look sharp, especially D-Day. Upon first glance, he looks just like a WWII soldier. His stance and, yes, the cigarette truly hammer home that good old Kubert aesthetic. Unfortunately for Dynamite, he looks too much like Solid Snake for my tastes. I don't know if it's just me, but the green in his jumpsuit looks more blue than green. Perhaps removing the chinstrap part of the beard and a slight color correction on the jumpsuit would go a long way in negating that association? Anyway, another great round from big z! |
