Ha-thought the XM-8 looked familiar! Wasn't sure it wasn't being considered, although maybe I heard it subconsciously. I think the XM-8 was used in the novelizations for Tom Clancy's Endwar and Ghost Recon games.

Yeah, Don't forget Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas as well. Internally, the XM8 is similar to theHK416 (no surprise there, as they're both made by H&K). I think the Army brass rejected the XM8 (despite its excellent performance in tests against the M4 and the FN SCAR) because it looked too different from what they were used to. Which is why H&K came up with the HK416, it uses the same short stroke piston assembly found in the XM8, but externally, the controls and visual hallmarks are very similar to the M4 and M16A2.

Thanks! I see you're a V for Vendetta fan. Great book, one of my top 5 comics of all time (hated the movie version, though, Natalie Portman notwithstanding).

The XM8 is out of the running as the replacement for the M16 and M4 (although the XM8 is really just a dressed up H&K G36K). Right now, the leading candidates for the Army's new assault rifle is down to the HK416 and the FN SCAR. Both are similarly superior to the M4 and M16 in "out of the box" accuracy & reliability tests and cost about the same, I guess who gets the contract depends on which company bribes more generals
Now all this talk about the AK as well, I know I watched one of those military Channel shows about top ten rifles of all time, and of course the AK won due to the fact it excelled in every category. Service length, range, reliability (right out of the mud), and the fact that more people have been killed by an AK-47 than any other rifle in history. Love the latest Oktober guard Zulu, they all look great. |

Been a bit busy, so haven't been able to do updates. Managed to update my October Guard organization:
I've assimilated the original Pravda Patrol with the classic and newer Oktober Guard characters to make a detachment the size of a reduced platoon. Also finished four composite images: Top row: Drakon, Schräge Bottom row: Ruslan, Hongen Design notes:
To read their full filecards, click on the FIlecard Project link in my signature. I've also updated the filecards and images of the other October Guard members I've posted previously, so just check back on the prior pages in this thread or look at the Modern GI Joe & Cobra Concepts folder via the link in my signature. Thanks for looking! Last edited by zuludelta; 09-08-2009 at 04:07 PM.. Reason: edited for spelling |

Again the amount of research you put into these guys is amazing. Great move making Ruslan Turkish. Like you said BLACKSEAFOR would have to have a Turk member. The fact that Ruslan isn't even a Russian name but actually Turkish is just gravy.

The amount of research you do is mind-boggling. Really. The work on Ruslan and Hongen is AMAZING. Loving the images for all of the Guard as well. I see you switched out the GSP face on Drakon for a meaner look as well (is Gorky CroCop?). I haven't been doing too well on my facial recognition as of late.
Great work, z. |

Glad you appreciate the research I put into the composite images and the filecards, LC. It takes me a much longer time to make the October Guard compared to the GI Joes because of the language differences. Navigating through defense industry and defense agency sites is obtuse enough a task without having to having to use multiple translators and transliterators to make sense of what's what.

Great work, z. Gorkij was a Russian navy officer, can't recall his name, though. The translation stuff is the thing that takes the most amount of time. A lot of online translation engines don't really take into account discourse context, so I still end up spending a lot of time parsing the info. |
