I like the rationalization of their histories as well. As for their names, I always thought it would have been more clever if their last names were Rouge, french for red. Since they're the heads of the Crimson Grenadiers, it would have worked a lot better than the generic names DDP gave them. The way you resolved that works really well.

DDP was bad, that's why
The Twins look good. Josh Blaylock is the example of what happens when a fanboy gets ahold of the property.

Fixed.
What makes it so bad is that they got various servicemen over the years as their "military consultants", and Blaylock proceeded to shoot down almost every suggestion the guys put forward (even when other members of the staff wanted them to listen). The only time he would heed their advice was to make sure ranks were drawn correctly or to get a weapon tip (anything the artist had to do basically). |

I really like DDP's run. It was fun to get to see the continuing adventures of the Joes.

Some fanboys would have done good, but I think Blaylock was the "bad" kind. The one that doesn't pay attention to details, just likes playing with the property.

I haven't read enough of the DDP stuff to comment intelligently or be overly critical of their written output, but what primarily kept me from trying out their books was the quality of the art. Not saying it was that bad, it's just that stylistically, it wasn't what I wanted in a GI Joe book. Their artists all seemed to have come from the early 1990s "Image" school of comic book illustration and storytelling, when I was more interested in something along the Ron Wagner/Lee Weeks vein, a more restrained style if you will. The art is a very big factor for me when considering a comic book purchase (if I just wanted a good read, I'd have bought a novel by a legitimate author instead of a comic book). I guess that's why it took me so long to get behind the current Joe title written by Chuck Dixon... Robert Atkins' art is reminiscent of that of the DDP stable of artists, and it was only when SL Gallant came in to replace him that I was able to enjoy what Dixon's trying to do.
Also, if you want to hear Larry Hama's opinion about what other writers are doing with GI Joe, he talks a little about the writing on GI Joe: Resolute in a recent interview on the Handsome Genius Club blog: http://handsomegeniusclub.blogspot.c...h?q=larry+hama I'm not gonna spoil it for you guys, but let's just say that it's not very flattering to Resolute writer Warren Ellis. Quite the opposite, in fact. As something of a fan of Ellis' early superhero work, I was a bit taken aback with Hama's criticism, but once the surprise wore off, I came around to thinking that it was a fair assessment of the writing, and it's something that I've actually noticed before with Ellis' attempts at military fiction. The biggest problem I had with most of DDP's stories is that they lacked direction or purpose. The Re-Instated storyline was fun, but Blaylock's writing needed a lot of work. Jerwa was ok, Casey was not. Even the WW III storyline had potential, but they just kinda dropped the ball. Most of the Special Missions were good, and some of the Frontline stories were decent. A matter of opinion, I suppose.

Wow that Red Star Update is great Zulu. He looks so good. Will Lt Gorky get that same look?
I saw Big Boa last night but it looks like you updated him a bit. He looks good, and he being a Marine just makes him the perfect opponent for Sgt. Slaughter. Brekhov looks good as well and is a solid update. |

Since I didn't know about most of the Action Force characters until you started on your project it's hard for me to get as excited about them as I do with the Joe/Cobra images, but when you do ex-Oktober Guardsman (along with any non-American ARAH figures) it's a real treat.
I absolutely love Brekhov and Red Star (Randy Orton?). Great work in differentiating the two, but I have to give extra kudos on Brekhov. His stance is really exciting and the face you used is full of battle hardened wisdom. The image really exudes a great deal of character, z. Big Boa. WOW. Fantastic update, and I'm digging the change to MMA (my favorite sport). Based on his diverse and practical combat background, he'd have been an interesting guy to watch! I initally was put off by the spandex/lycra pants on an MMA fighter, but I remembered Shinya Aoki wears similar ring gear (as do many other fighters in Japanese promotions, especially former Dutch styled kickboxers). The only thing that's kind of off is the boxing shoes. I'd think if he wore any ring styled shoes (as opposed to going barefoot or using ankle supports) in a training situation, they'd be wrestling shoes. Just a small nit, though. You found a clever way to incorporate the chest straps (seeing as every other MMA fighter is covered in tats). Great work! |
