He looks like Red Spot to me, who I actually like. Great to see more of your work.

Anyway, I'm thinking of taking pics of the Retaliation Ninja Dojo Pack Beachhead figure and mocking it up in digicam like I did for the Retaliation GI Joe Trooper. The figure would be a great army builder/custom base if it wasn't so damned expensive/inconvenient to buy/find multiples. (I don't mind the Vulcan Raven-looking Roadblock that comes in the pack—if nothing else, it feels like I'm getting my money's worth in the amount of sheer plastic—but the haphazardly designed Kamakura, with the ill-fitting hood and odd choice of webgear, is sort of annoying.) |

Yeah, it's a good figure. I just ignore the cape and garish colors. He'd make a great modern Hit & Run with different lower legs, or even a poor man's Airtight. I've also thought of taking the unmasked head and putting it on the 3 pack Airborne to make a WW II paratrooper. BTW, good to have you back, Z. I've missed this thread!
As for the Joe Trooper figure, honestly, I don't even think the colors are that bad (at least when talking about the brown cape/poncho variant) considered how much Hasbro has scaled back its paint ops across its other lines (the newer Marvel Legends look pretty sad with their swirly cast-in-plastic coloring)... if there's one paint app on the figure that bugs me, it's the silver/metallic knee pads. It just clashes with everything else. I never use the unmasked head with the figure... the fauxhawk (which is another thing that bugs me about the figure, they should have gone with a "high and tight," WWII Ranger mohawk instead of the gelled up, Jersey Shore, rooster hair) sucks, IMO. As it is, the peaked fauxhawk prevents the gas mask/helmet from sitting properly on the figure's head (the figure's chin ends up peeking out from the mask's bottom edge. Here's a digicamo mock-up of the Retaliation Beachhead figure:
I think it would also work as a PoC/30th Anniversary "greenshirt" style army builder what with the mask and all or even a PoC/Retaliation style OG13 base body for guys like Grunt, Zap, Short-Fuze, Hawk, and maybe even Stalker (just swap out the head for more individual head sculpts). The black uniform elements aren't really very practical (in RL, the webgear, boots, and gloves would all probably be in some variation of olive drab), but from an aesthetic/toy design point of view, it helps break up the color scheme and provide a subtle link to the old 1982 figure designs, with their black boots and webgear. Nice photoshop. I think sticking the Renegades Tunnel Rat head on the Retaliation Joe Trooper body makes a nice Spytroops Chief Torpedo update. I have one that is waiting on a AOR2 paintjob. I think it could also pass for an ME Sub Zero with a white body and blue hat/webgear.

Thanks, man, Red Spot is one of the better latter-day pre-25th Joes in terms of the design... if you'll allow me to wax pretentious about toys for a moment, it seems to that the philosophy behind the figure's design harked back to the glory days (early- to mid-1980s) of the ARAH era: combining elements of the classic, "realistic" toy soldier that is a staple of 20th century toy design, but incorporating enough future tech/sci-fi elements that it stands out as more than just a typical army man toy.

Stalker (V13) uses the entire body -Renegades Duke (V44) uses the upper legs -Renegades Law (V6) uses the upper legs -Renegades Lifeline (V7) uses the legs -POC/30th + DG Cobra Trooper (V15 + V17) uses the legs -Retaliation 3-pack Firefly (V26) uses the legs So it's possible to hunt down some more accessible parts if you want to make a set of OG13 with this more modern styling, although some of these figures are harder to find and more expensive than the Beachhead 3-pack. Good to see you back ZD, and good to see this thread resurrected.

BTW, for those of you curious about the process of how I made the Joe Trooper image from taking the pictures to compositing/stylizing it in Photoshop, here are some pictures:
My cheap-ass light box set-up: The camera I used is an old Sony Cyber-Shot... most current smartphones probably have better built-in cameras, but it works for my purposes and the macro feature is fine given that I monkey with the image in Photoshop anyway. Even with a "pure-white" light bulb on the lamp and white cloth screens to diffuse the light and get rid of unwanted shadows on the lightbox, there's still a yellow-ish tinge on the image (likely because of reflection from the room walls) and unwanted shadowing (because my lamp doesn't put out enough light): A quick pass-through with Photoshop 7 (yes, all my tools are either cheaply improvised, or decade-old tech/software), upping the contrast, putting texture on the cape/cloak, hiding the crotch joints, replacing the background with a "greyscreen," etc. and I had this, which I was originally going to use a reference for touching up the paint on the Joe Trooper figure and as a base for some custom card art: The image sat on my hard drive for a couple of months... I'd actually forgotten about it until I was backing up my files over the weekend. I used a digital camo texture I found on the web (I think it was originally woodland MARPAT, but I changed the color values a little for more "toy-etic" hues), went into Photoshop again and came out with this: |
