Very sad to hear that, zuludelta. I know I didn't post much in this thread (maybe even only once), but I followed this very regularly and enjoyed your work with the Joes.
Your work inspired my own creativity in the form of a tabletop game using your images and concepts of a modern and more realistic team that not only I, but several of my friends enjoy. Even though we may not get any *new* material, know that all your efforts continue to inspire many stories and hours of enjoyment, and if you ever decide to return to the project, we'll all be here. Hey Zulu, I'd be interested in your original ideas.

I feel you, ZD. Before I ever came across this thread I had a similar idea, but with so much pre-existing fodder to pick and choose from, I got overwhelmed quickly. I decided to step outside of the GI Joe realm and craft my own force, which allowed me to work within one of my other favorite fictional elements, the Cthulhu mythos - which has developed similar problems, but on a more functional level. I'd love to see you take your work outside of the confines of ARAH. I have no doubt that anything you do would be interesting to at least 80% of the Tankers that have followed you this far. Keep us all posted!

Well you did as much as anyone could do. I loved all the early works when you included everybody, and I saw through you how hard it is to convert the team into a completely realistic team. Nevertheless I doubt anyone has ever put as much effort into this aspect of JOes

I'll miss your thread, Zulu. I know we've had some interesting discussions about the characters. Even if you don't continue continue with trying to make a "realistic" team structure, I'd love to see some more of your work on how the characters would look if they were real. Thanks for all your hard work.

I'll likely still make and post composited images here if I get the increasingly rare itch to boot up Photoshop, no more filecards or "FM" style military organization manuals though. Oh, and thanks for keeping up with the thread. You guys (everyone, not just LL71) are the best. |

Thanks for sharing your ideas, hard work and literal blood, sweat and tears with all of us. I know you've inspired lots of other enthusiasts (not just me) to craft a more realistic take of our joeverses. Thanks again, and I'd love to see your original work and ideas
Take care my friend. Last edited by Tyroc; 01-06-2012 at 06:01 AM.. |

Thanks Tyroc.
But it's not like I'll be "leaving" HISStank guys... it's just that I generally keep to this thread and occasionally the "What Secrets Lurk in the Filecards" thread, and with my interest in the Filecard Project dying down, I probably won't be posting as much. Feel free to PM me or even continue posting in this thread (I've just put it on "subscribe") if you want to talk about anything remotely related to the conceit behind the Filecard Project, or if you want to bounce off ideas for your own Joe-verses or original character concepts or whatever. At this point, I'm probably the world's leading expert in the subject of "Conflating G.I. Joe and Late 20th Century U.S. Military Organizational Doctrine" ha ha ha. Well, it's good to hear you'll still be around. I may take you up on bouncing around some ideas.

I guess my heart just isn't in the project, anymore. When I started this (two? three years ago?), I was labouring under the mistaken notion that GI Joe needed "fixing." I had grown older, and it seemed natural to me that one of the favourite things from my childhood should grow up with me, and if Hasbro or Devil's Due or IDW or whoever didn't want to prod GI Joe's maturation along, I would do it myself for myself and whoever else was willing to come along for the ride.
But I've come to the personal realization that GI Joe was a thing of its time, intended for an audience of a certain age and inclination. My growing dissatisfaction with the project, and GI Joe (the property) as a whole, wasn't the result of GI Joe being mishandled or broken... it was really frustration born out of my inability to accept that GI Joe at its core is, to use Hasbro's term, a "boy's toy," and the things I wanted to see in it—the organizational authenticity, the historicity—would never seamlessly jibe with something designed as a boy's toy first (it would require too many changes, I feel, to the point that I might as well be working with original creations). All that being said, I'm still very much into the idea of crafting conceptual military/paramilitary organizations and personnel and compositing what they would look like... but these are original ideas and concepts, and without the GI Joe tie-in, I don't know if any HISStankers outside of myself would be interested in them, so for now, they're just ideas and sketches in my "notebook," so to speak. Over the corse of 2 weeks, I actually drew up (OCD much?) a COBRA rank and M.O.S. tree to make sense of it all. It helped me weed out the redundant characters, narrow my collecting, save money and create a new Joe verse. All while staying as close to ARAH as possible. The new IDW story arc of many Cobra Commanders throughout history really makes sense to my adult brain and allows me to keep the disgruntled used car salesman Commander of the past. I try to leave what I loved about G.I. Joe as a kid as intact as I can but with just enough adult sensibilities to make it "believable". Customising really let's me refine my "Joe verse".
