So now we know...
Hard to believe that there were never any characters that had been a part of Delta Force - unless that part of their file cards had been classified.

And it would likely be the same for members of the Joe team. They're not going to go through all the blood, sweat, and tears to get into the most elite joint unit in the Armed Forces, only to switch over to SFOD-D or DEVGRU or wherever at the first opportunity, unless it involves a serious career advancement opportunity. I'd like to imagine that the team evolved over the years. Right now, I'm thinking they started out as an RDJTF asset (up until 1983 or so), became part of REDCOM (the predecessor of USSOCOM) up until 1987, and then I'm not sure if I want them to have become a JSOC asset after REDCOM became USSOCOM or if they detoured into becoming a DIA SOG* before being absorbed into JSOC as one of their various covert action teams. * - yeah, I know the DIA doesn't actually have SOGs, unlike the CIA, but it's one of those "plausibly believable" digressions that works, I think, and a lot of the missions the Joes were doing in the 1987/88 comics (especially in GI Joe: Special Missions) were pretty SOG-ish |

I imagine it's just a matter of sticking with a career track, like anyone would do. It takes a huge investment of time (up to two years of constant upgrade training, apart from the years an applicant has already spent in SF or special light infantry/75th Ranger skills-maintenance training) and effort on the part of the applicant and training resources on the part of SFOD-D to get an operator fully qualified and eligible for the "T" Special Qualification Identifier. I imagine brass wouldn't be too eager to just let that operator move to a different unit, and that operator wouldn't be too enthusiastic about moving to a different unit after all that work towards earning the "T" distinction.
And it would likely be the same for members of the Joe team. In an email correspondance with Mr. Hama, he has stated that he meant Low-Light to be a Delta Force sniper. The Action Force Battle Files mention that several other characters may have previously served with Delta Force: Hawk, Duke, etc. The continuity of Action Force doesn't exactly square with ARAH, but it's pretty close at a lot of points.

I'm convinced Hama intended GI Joe to be a fictionalized version of Delta Force initially. There are all sorts of clues in the early comic book issues that this was his line of thinking early on, from the official unit name being "Special Counter-Terrorist Group Delta" to the flashback to the helicopter crash that disfigured Snake-Eyes in shown issue #10 (described by Dr. Venom as—I'm paraphrasing here—"an early GI Joe mission in the Middle East") being a not-so-subtle reference to Operation Eagle Claw. At some point though (I'd like to say 1986 or so), Hama started writing GI Joe more like an SAD SOG-type of unit, especially in GI Joe: Special Missions (the high-water mark for the property in the 1980s, in my personal opinion). |

Yeah, the Joes really make sense as their universe's Delta Force. I was thinking about that reference to Operation Eagle Claw, and wondered if you'd use it, Zulu. And since they are among the best, it does make sense that most members would stay with the team for a long time and not just go from unit to unit.

Having the team as a DIA asset is certainly one of the more plausible ways to reconcile the "jointness" of GI Joe.

To my mind, when Secretary Rumsfeld expanded the DIA's HumInt capabilities, it seemed to me like that would be the best place for G.I. Joe... does anyone still keep them as an Army unit?
