I had Alpine (who stopped appearing in the comics in 1986 and whose toy was discontinued in 1987) serve as the "exchange" for Big Ben (Alpine speaks fluent German, according to the comics, and since Big Ben used to teach at the NATO LRRP School in Germany, I thought it made sense) and Recondo serve as the exchange guy for Skymate (because the SASR do a lot of training with the Gurkhas at the British Army Jungle Warfare Training School in Brunei and also because Recondo was the basis for Digger, a character unique to the Australian reprints of Action Force and GI Joe who first appeared in the reprints published by Australia's Cyclone Comics company in 1990). I had Hit & Run serve as the exchange guy for Windchill v2 (whom I assumed to be an SAS guy, since his filecard states that he's from Scotland) primarily just to continue the trend of using military mountaineer types as the SAS exchange people (but it also worked out that a garishly-recoloured version of Hit & Run was sold in the UK under the Action Force line between 1991 and 1993). |

I like it a lot. You told us ahead of time you would be switching out the fake locations for real ones, but it's really cool to see it on the page like that.

Glad you dig it. I'm trying to touch on all the major Joe operations shown in the original comic book and in Special Missions. I initially wanted to ignore the whole Cobra Island thing, but have found actual precedent for private entities declaring sovereignty on man-made islands (The Republic of Minerva in the South Pacific almost mirrors Cobra's experience with Cobra Island right down to a supervillain-esque anarcho-capitalist type funding the creation of an island, except you know, they lost after a military intervention challenging their sovereignty). The Phoenix Foundation actually sounds like it could have been Hama's blueprint for Cobra.

It's funny you mention your reluctance to include Cobra Island because at this point I sort of just expect you to find a way to make all that ridiculousness work. It's become my favorite part of what you do.

I never heard of the Phoenix foundation, but eeriely similar, even the island of Abaco. I wonder if Cobra would ever have two Islands? or maybe a more continental republic with island territories?

The Phoenix Foundation was one of those things that looked good on paper (no taxes! no cops! everything is privately-owned!), but in reality had all the potential makings for a cult or a political front for all sorts of illegal businesses. Reading more about him now, founder Michael Oliver really does seem like he might have served partially as the inspiration for Hama's take on Cobra Commander. |

You guys know how I've always wondered whether Hama intended GI Joe to be a stand-in for Delta Force or if Delta Force and GI Joe co-exist alongside each other in the "GI Joe universe"?
Well, going through all the old comics, I finally found a reference to Delta Force's existence in the Joe-verse that settles finally the question. In GI Joe: Special Missions #2 ("Words of Honor"), Mossad agent Ibraham Efrati stumbles upon a team led by Recondo in Brazil and concludes that they're members of the GI Joe team, saying that they're "too scruffy to be Delta, and not weird enough to be SOG" (making reference to Delta Force and the CIA Special Activities Division's Special Operations Group). |
