Operation Desert Sabre was the so-called "100 hour war" waged in parts of Kuwait and Iraq from 24 February 1991 to 28 February 1991 (it was a real thing), as part of the larger Operation Desert Storm. But yeah, I'm sort of substituting/admixing real-world conflicts with the major events in the comics to lend the whole thing more historicity (in this case, I plan on writing that Cobra operatives were hired by the Ba'athist Iraq-backed Provisional Government of Free Kuwait to supplement their meager and undertrained troops, and that's how the Joes and Cobra ended up facing off during the Persian Gulf War). |

I've crafted a new DUI/SSI (distinctive unit insignia/shoulder sleeve insignia) and beret flash for GI Joe:
DUI/SSI (distinctive unit insignia/shoulder sleeve insignia) beret flash The beret flash design borrows elements from the toy card logo/dress and the 1980s/early 1990s CENTCOM beret flash. The stars represent the five uniformed services that contribute GI Joe personnel (the three bigger stars represent the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the two smaller stars represent the Navy's "descendant services": the Marines and the Coast Guard). I've created Orders of Battle for the years 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, and 1994:
As I'd mentioned earlier, the primary criteria I used for deciding which Joes were active in what year were based on when they appeared in the Marvel comics and/or whether or not they had a figure in retail circulation. I had Grunt leave the unit in early 1987, for example (to coincide with his separation from the Army as shown in the comics), but had him re-enlist and re-join the team in 1992 (to coincide with the release of a new Grunt figure). The images for the dossiers will be a while, though. |

Wow thes order of battles are nicve it's what I've always wanted to see. It's how I imagined it would work out over the years.
Only one I saw missing whether by design or not was Skystriker. Renegades pest control is classic!

Glad you're digging the Order of Battle. It took a fair amount of work looking stuff up (figuring out what certain units were called back in the 1980s and such) and cross-referencing comic book appearances and retail circulation dates for the toys. I did omit some guys, though: Skystriker (the pilot, not the plane), the mail-order guys (The Fridge, Starduster, and Super Trooper), the Star Brigade-only guys (Robo-J.O.E. and Space Shot), Major Altitude, General Flagg (the second one, not the original one... the younger Flagg just screws up the timeline because he's a brigadier general who's the kid of a guy who was also a brigadier general just ten years prior) and the Eco-Warriors (Ozone and Clean Sweep). Oh, and I renamed Col Courage from "Cliff V. Mewett" to "Clifford V. Mewes" (thanks to Master Thespian for the suggestion) so he has a different real name from that of Airborne v2 (who was also named "Cliff V. Mewett").
I might add in Ozone and Clean Sweep in the Special Support Staff section, though. Last edited by zuludelta; 08-26-2011 at 12:45 PM.. |

Those lineups looks really good, z. They make a lot of sense in terms of structure, timeline, and relationships. I'm a big fan of the new insignia. Really harkens back to the ARAH logo.

Really like the OrBat you created Zulu. I was impressed with how many characters you did end up including, such as the astronauts, firefighters, BF 2K, and Sky Patrol. One thing I noticed though-you have Hawk listed as a Brigadier Gen. in '88 and '90, but in the last 2 he's a Col. again. Otherwide, it's great stuff. I love the insignia, too.

Slowly digesting the Orbats. Love them Z. I like the little touches like the footnotes detailing Big Ben's exchange and the little nod to Hit and Run's SAS Action Force service

Nice work - very thorough. I'll be very interested to see further development of this. Any chance you'll do something similar for the Cobra side of the fence?
I also see you threw Ice Cream Soldier in there. Heh.
