I've always wondered what exactly the relationship between GI Joe and the Steel Brigade is supposed to be. On one hand, it doesn't make sense to think of the Steel Brigade as being a part of GI Joe, since it's much, much larger than GI Joe (the Steel Brigade is, well, a brigade; while GI Joe has never been bigger than a company or a reinforced platoon in size). On the other hand, GI Joe is commanded by a brigadier general (first General Flagg, and then by Hawk), so you would think that maybe GI Joe is just a small, special operations-capable component of a larger Steel Brigade commanded by Flagg/Hawk (I'm obviously not counting the "Steel Brigade Commander" character as canon here, my stance on the Convention-exclusive and GIJCC figures is that they're non-canon as far as ARAH is concerned... I've got to draw the line somewhere).
Any ideas on this relationship between the two organizations? |

I like the sound of that. The GI Joe is a team within the whole Steel Brigade structure. The Joes could all be Squad Leaders and when duty calls they form into elite squad under the name GIJOE! Maybe they can function as a UN type organization. Perhaps in the future when the UN falls apart and NATO breaks up, something like that could be plausible. Heck Steel Brigade Commander can even fit in, if you are rotating out personnel anyway. SBCommander could be XO or 3rd in charge under Col Courage or Flagg III

Steel Brigade could just be the formalized name for the "greenshirts" organization. That's how I've always thought of them, anyway. If we think of Steel Brigade as being descended from the US RDF (or even CENTCOM), they could easily well be an 82nd Airborne Division Brigade Combat Team.

Yeah then the Joes could be the LRS unit of the Brigade.

Oooh. Good idea. Or they could be the Brigade's designated QRF.

I guess it all depends on the role, but as you had envisioned the Rapid Deployment Force, I could see the Joes would be involved in more Direct action than reconnaissance. Directly under Hawk's command.
You know he'd hate dealing with the day to day grind of Brigade level paperwork. Still his mission would involve getting things done. This would be a way that he could be dealing with a hand picked team. I suppose they would be a company sized unit if you include everyone, but more along the lines of a green beret ODC set up. Maybe 9 ODA teams, plus HQ element? I suppose an QRF could be set up anyway the commander wants. But using the guise of a Brigade-sized Rapid Deployment Force, he would be able to pull from different branches.

If I'm not mistaken this is now a linear timeline project so there will never be a time where everyone is included at once. Some will be leave, be KIA, based on Marvel chronology/ARAH figure releases.

Well we may be talking about Steel Brigade in a hypothetical role. But if we transpose Steel Brigade over Zulu's RDF then I think the Joe force is smaller. But I'm not sure of the size of the total unit. A brigade is like 3000-5000 man strong. A Marine Expeditionary Brigade is like 14,000 strong, but some of that is Naval personnel.
Since I was little I've always had such a hard time just picking a few Joes. Before I was done I would end up picking everybody except Star Brigade and the Eco-Warriors. How big is the GIJoe Rapid Deployment Force suppose to be Zulu? The RDF concept from the Carter years was like 100,000 man strong Command. That's Huge!

I like the idea of the Steel Brigade being the "greenshits"/probationary Joes. Again, you don't wan't to make the "official" team too big, or they lose their ability to be a true RDF. And I'm assuming that "Operation Desert Sabre" is your name for the Battle of Benzheen?
