Well only he can answer that question. I was just offering a little perspective. Either way, in the real-world military or a fantasy-based element like ARAH, there will always be grey areas that are typically dealt with when problems from them arise.

How does the subject matter expert stuff work? If they need to run an amphibious or SCUBA operation in '83 after Torpedo and Gung Ho have joined do they just form up a team of the other guys and they lead them...
... I would imagine that most characters would have the airborne training, but the SCUBA training in particular isn't typically something I would imagine most of those guys having. So does it become a case that every Joe member needs to be airborne, HALO, SCUBA, and inflatable boat trained either as a part of Joe indoctrination or beforehand? Quote:
It probably wouldn't hurt GI Joe candidates to be as well-versed and fully-trained in as many different areas as possible, but I doubt it would preclude them from getting on the team if they were lacking a skill, such as mountain climbing, because in order to even be considered, their background would need to be exemplary, and their reputation outstanding.

I imagine the OG 13 may not have had all the skills Special Operators get these days. But if Zulu is using the RDF as a basis, which comprised of the 82nd Airborne, 101 Air Calvary, and 2 Ranger Battalions, I would assume Airborne would be a prerequisite. But basic Airborne school is like 2 weeks, so they could make exceptions for those guys and then push them through Airborne School.
To make a real-world comparison, it is certainly not the case that every member of an SF Group's special operations combat diving-qualified A-Team is already eligible for the special operations combat diving badge before they joined SF. For most of them, they only became eligible for and attended special operations combat diver training after completing the full "Q" course (that is, after they've completed the initial qualification training for entry into SF -- which can take anywhere from a little over a year to almost two years). I imagine GI Joe would be the same. The team has a core set of "rapid deployment skills" in parachuting, advanced land navigation, mountaineering, tactical driving, amphibious landing/insertion and it's expected that a Joe candidate would have significant skills/training in one or two (but preferably all five) of those modalities. But GI Joe training should bring a candidate up to the minimum required skill level even if he lacks training and experience in one of those areas (it's not as if the soldiers in SOF stop training and studying once they've gained entry into an SOF unit... if anything, they end up spending more time training and studying). For amphibious operations, I'd like to imagine that all the Joes will be trained up to at least the Army Class One Survival Swimmer (Advanced Survival Swimmer) or USMC First Class Survival Swimmer standard after initial Joe training (that is, they can perform basic surface swimmer rescue, can conduct water entries from at least a height of ten feet while carrying a rifle, etc.) which is more than the minimum needed by LRS soldiers who conduct waterborne/amphibious/surface swimming insertions (IIRC, that only requires a Class Two qualification). Subject matter experts like Torpedo and Gung-Ho will obviously be way beyond that and have tons of additional, related skills (such as actual combat diving using SCUBA and CCUBA gear) besides and will be in charge of overseeing training and qualification in the necessary amphibious landing/insertion skills as well as leading particularly complex amphibious operations. Thanks! |

BTW, don't let the lack of recent updates get you thinking I'm losing interest in the project... just been busy with some other stuff. Also, I'm trying to think my way through this more than I have previous iterations of the project, so I don't make the same mistake of putting in a lot of work only to scrap everything at the end.

Here's my take on Scarlett for "Project 1982":
Took me a while to come up with what in my mind was a valid reinterpretation of the original's one-piece swimsuit/leotard. Hopefully this way she looks more like a female super spy in the Bond girl mode than an extra from an early 1980s workout video. Replaced the crossbow with an integrally suppressed Ruger Mk. 22 (with a scope, to sort of match the silhouette of the toy's crossbow), which, if you believe the stories, was the weapon of choice of CIA assassins back in the 1980s (its noise signature is supposed to be equivalent to that of a CO2 pistol). The first three were so close to the originals this one caught me off guard a bit. That said, this one looks INCREDIBLE. She definitely gives off the Bond girl vibe you were going for. I hope her filecard reflects that as well. Nice work on the Johansson face, BTW.

Thanks. I suppose "Project 1978" could be made up of the old Adventure Team guys, but I'm not really into them. I've toyed with the idea of making a Marvel Studios movie-verse version of Fury Force, though, but that's way, way into the future. I've been playing around with "casting" contemporary actors for the roles, though I haven't made anything in the way of composited images: Tyrese Gibson for Nick Fury, Jr., Sandy Bar or Meital Dohan for Lila Galil, Diego Luna for Brujo, Steven Ho for Louie Louie, Idris Elba for Jelly, generic Hollywood beefcake (Channing Tatum? Josh Duhamel?) for Steeler, and an experienced movie martial artist/fight coordinator in a mask for Spook (my preference would be either Jeff Imada or Donnie Yen in a non-speaking/minimally speaking role). |
