Ultimately though, I think the issue of whether "Special Counterterrorist Group Delta, a.k.a. G.I. Joe" co-exists alongside Delta Force or is meant to be an alternate reality version of Delta Force is something I can sidestep with the project and leave up to the reader, since there are no explicit mentions of Delta Force in the original ARAH filecards that I can remember (at least up 'til 1989 or so).

It really makes no difference, even if you had Joe members who were former Delta. It's all in fun anyway.
The more I read through the History of RDF, the more I see the Joe correlations. Although nowhere as big, it could easily fit in as a small unit that is part of the whole 100,000 strong force. Plus this gives you a way to include any Generals and pilots if you choose to do so.

Yeah, going that route also allows me to work with a much more fluid organization in terms of roles, ranks, and such. Arranging the Joes according to wide-spectrum and overlapping "classes" instead of restricting them to highly task-specific billets (much like how SFOD-A units are organized).

It's the only way to get it to work if I'm to retain some measure of faithfulness to the comics and the filecards, really. Just like SEAL squads or Special Forces A-Teams aren't organized in the typical infantry squad manner, I'd like to imagine the Joe team is just as versatile as well, open to being task-organized in various ways as it fits the mission. I'd already started going in that direction with the whole recapture and recovery squad in the last iteration of the doc, and this is just a further refinement of the concept.

It's figuring out what the general "classes" are that I'm working on right now. With Special Forces, the SFOD-A functional "classes" (which are billets, actually) generally fall in line with the various SF MOSes:
I'll be using similar nomenclature for GI Joe team positions, although I'll likely reword them. Maybe change "Weapons Sergeant" to "Combat Arms Sergeant" and add other functional classes for expert vehicle mechanics and drivers. Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard personnel (such as Torpedo, Gung-Ho, Cutter, Shipwreck, etc.) will be technical advisers (subject matter experts) specializing in amphibious expeditionary warfare. The pilots (both Army and Air Force) and Doc won't be part of the "core" GI Joe team per se, but will be designated as being in a permanent support relationship with the team. I'm not sure what I'll do with Keelhaul yet... he wasn't that prominent in the comic book so it's unclear where he falls in line in the hierarchy of GI Joe-affiliated flag officers. Is he a contemporary of Generals Austin and Hollingsworth? Was he the interim replacement for the late General Flagg before Hawk's promotion to brigadier general? |

So have you ever figured out how Cobra as a PMC and the Joes as a DSCA asset will come into conflict with each other? Well that can be for another day.
