I always the made the half hearted compromise to give him a light five o'clock shadow since he had two equally represented looks right from the start (comics/filecard vs cartoon/toy).

Yeah, the 5 'o' clock shadow seems like the best way to go for Breaker.
Here's Clutch (click on the filecard to view the full-sized version): I also updated some of the information on the Stalker and Zap file cards, so you might want to check them out again: |

That's an approximate representation of Clutch, although I always envisioned him wearing coveralls. I think you might want to try using the PASGT helmet, or a prototype version that would be more similar to the helmets the original Joes came with. When can we expect the next figure?

I think I might switch his M1 helmet to a mid-late 1970s T56-6 or early 1980s DH-132 Combat Vehicle Crewman (CVC) helmet, though, as the T56-6 and the DH-132 do look more similar to the helmet worn by the Clutch figure. I'll probably do Scarlett or Steeler next. Last edited by zuludelta; 07-09-2011 at 03:25 PM.. |

Clutch looks good to me. Is photobucket taking a really long time to update the Zap image or is it just on my end?

After looking at pictures of them, the T56-6 would be a better choice of the two, I think. As a vehicle operator, I think it would make sense to give Clutch a relatively hands-free communication device. This helmet would definitely would work for Breaker. I could see Steeler using the DH-132.
I know Wikipedia's info is suspect sometimes, but it said the PASGT was developed in 1975 and first saw combat in Grenada (1983), so it would make sense that it was being integrated into the system earlier than this. And it would also follow that an elite unit like GI Joe would get the newest equipment before the rest of the military. At least, that's how it seemed when I was in. We still had M35's (deuce-and-a-half) and M1031's (CUCV contact truck) in 2003, when most units had transitioned from those vehicles in the previous decade.

http://www.cardcow.com/images/set345/card00964_fr.jpg The MP in the center of the picture is wearing an M1 helmet, but the female soldier behind him and the glasses-wearing soldier to his left (your right) appear to be wearing PASGTs. I might have to reconsider the choice of the M1, although from what I can tell, M1's were still the dominant headgear worn in combat up until 1983 (check out these pics from 1983 operations in Grenada and Lebanon): http://warrelics.eu/forum/military_p...op_728x428.jpg http://warrelics.eu/forum/military_p...t-nyc42463.jpg Last edited by zuludelta; 07-10-2011 at 03:47 PM.. |

Been trying to work out how the original 13 would be organized, taking into account that they also need people to crew a light tank, operate a light infantry mortar, man a medium machine gun, and possible operate a field artillery cannon. The more I think about it, the more the idea of having them organized as a quasi-SF "A-Team" appealed to me. That is, instead of each soldier being assigned a limited billet based on traditional infantry or cavalry squad positions (i.e., squad leader, machine gunner, grenadier, etc.), I think a better way to organize them in a way that also reflects how they performed early in the comics, is to organize them according to very broad specializations that comprise multiple, "traditional" billets. Here's what I have so far:
In this case, the Operations Sergeant and Weapons Sergeants will all be combat arms (infantry or artillery) NCOs cross-trained in the use of the team's light infantry mortars, medium machine guns, and air-transportable field artillery. They'd also be trained as gunners and loaders for the team's light tank, with at least one of them also trained to actually drive the light tank. The Transportation Sergeant would be trained to perform specialist maintenance on the team's wheeled vehicles (obviously, all team members will be trained to drive the VAMP, so making him "just" the VAMP driver would make him redundant) and would also be cross-trained as a light tank driver. Between the Team Leader, Assistant Team Leader, and Operations Sergeant, at least one of them should be trained as a tank commander and at least one of the officers has to be qualified as a fire direction officer (it doesn't have to be the same person). Obviously, any extra weapons and vehicle training would fall under "GI Joe training," and thus wouldn't actually be reflected in their list of pre-GI Joe military occupational specialties. Sounds reasonable, no? |

I like the flexibility and versatility of it. You're squeezing blood from a stone in a way.
Are you leaning towards: Flash = tank driver #2 Hawk = fire direction officer Steeler = tank commander ? |
