Here's the first image in what I'm now calling Project: 1982. I'm actually thinking of restricting the project to the original 1982 guys, as it gives it some measure of symmetry with the Oktober Guard (who are supposed to be the USSR equivalent of the Joe team... the comparison stops being valid, I think, when the Joes start outnumbering the Oktober Guard 5 to 1).
Stalker's gear is all period-accurate, AFAIK. I gave him M81 Woodland trousers and a similarly-patterned beret, and his sweater is patterned in brown-dominant ERDL (to me, the camo pattern on the original Stalker toy and card art is suggestive of ERDL/M81 Woodland, not so much tiger stripe camo, which seems to have been the tack taken in many other interpretations). The harness is a Vietnam War-era patrol harness commonly used by LRRP personnel. Filecard to follow soon-ish. |

Nice. Only the original 13? I guess I just wonde how you would interpret Duke and Flint. But looks good. I guess we just need to take this as his original Filecard and nothing more. There is no real troop structure anymore just the individuals and whatever role they fill. Nothing wrong with that mind you. Different than what we've been through over the last few years but still, I think this captures that nostalgic feeling when I got my first Stalker. He wasn't my first Joe, but he was a strong leader and the only one to wear camo.
Does this mean we'll see Sparks and Gen Flagg?

I like the first installment - looking forward to the remaining twelve. It would be awesome if somebody whipped up some spiffy custom figures of your composite images.

I'll be interested in seeing how this new/old project works out, Zulu. Personally, this has to be one of my favorite threads, next to the filecards one. I have to agree with Master Thespian that the "concept" of Joe is really timeless, for the most part. Duke can still be a SF sergeant who worked with tribesmen to defeat a common enemy, just fast forward to post-9/11 rather than the 1960's. Torpedo and Wet Suit are still bad-ass SEALs. Lifeline is still a former civillian paramedic who joined the Army for philosophical reasons. But I aslo agree that trying to include too many Joes post-1986 or so is difficult. Personally, I cherry pick the ones I want to include in my 'verse, but 1986 is my cut off year before things get too crazy. No space shuttle. No carrier or multiple fighter jets. No big tanks, Humvee-type vehicles and ATVs/motorcycles are okay. Likewise with the Tommahawk and either the Dragonfly, Locust, or NAC. Ultimately, though, it's your baby, and you do some awesome work, Z.

I'm not saying this approach is definitively better or truer or whatever and I don't want to come off as being combative or defensive. But this approach touches on an aspect of Hama and Rudat's GI Joe that I found personally appealing that I wouldn't have been able to address had I continued with a "modernized," 21st century take on the property. That's really the base motivation behind the change in my take on the project. |
