I still wonder what is the best way to pit Joe Force against Cobra? I like the idea Zulu of a sort of Weapons Proliferation Watchdog group, but will it have them more Intel based than anything and not leave enough room for Direct Action? I mean will they turn into CSI Trucial Abysmia? I suppose you will add more either Federal Law Enforcement guys or change some of them?
It has to be built on a Weapons Intelligence Team (or to a more limited extent, Counterintelligence or Battlefield Surveillance) base, because those really are the only contexts where you'll see a mix of genders and specialties like infantry/cavalry/combat engineers (serving as trackers, surveillance teams, recon, and security teams), MP, CBRN, counterintelligence, EOD, and CID personnel all working together jointly in fulfillment of a specific, common, permanent mission (and not just working together in an ad hoc manner, where they just happen to be working together via circumstance or coincidence). Give me time, and I'll try my best to make it work out so that it doesn't come off as something as trite as "CSI Trucial Abysmia." Last edited by zuludelta; 05-06-2011 at 06:31 PM.. |

I'm glad you found a way to cut down on the number of personnel. You're right to say that there may be far more detail than the average reader needs, but all of that research has helped you flush out an incredibly realistic concept of the Joes and it adds layers, whether seen or not, that enrich your organization. Keep it up!

I'm sure you will flesh out all the details, I'm just unfamiliar with the Direct action side of what they do. Plus you're going to have to change some of the characters somewhat to fit the mission. Armor and Artillery mostly although they can mostly function as drivers and gunners.

I'd like to imagine GIJOE as being, instead of "Tier One," they're "Tier A," in that you can't really draw a direct comparison between GIJOE and JSOC units because they do different things. Apples and oranges. Last edited by zuludelta; 05-07-2011 at 02:06 AM.. |

Will you have to expand the Tracker teams to compensate? Will they still need the Long Range Surviellance guys or a hybrid of the 2 together?

Right now, what I'm thinking is that the central feature of the organization is a Recovery and Recapture Platoon (loosely modeled after both a US Army SRT-based Threat Management Force and the USMC's CQB/Recapture Tactics Platoons) composed of a mix of MOUT-trained infantrymen, SRT-qualified MPs, and CID agents. Around that, I'll be adding counterintelligence/HUMINT support sections, an EOD/IEDD team, a sapper section, a CBRN recon/decon team, and a reconnaisssance and security platoon (this is where the other infantry and cavalry scout assets go, where they serve as trackers, combat hunters, convoy security, etc.). On top of that, I'm thinking of adding two detachments that are located in geographically separate locations... a maritime security detachment that conducts anti-piracy and counter-smuggling missions alongside CJTF-HOA off the east coast of Africa, and a cold weather operations detachment stationed in Greenland that supports DSCA and occasionally ICE attaché and NATO operations in Northern Europe. |

Wow it's amazing how your mind works. I remember as a kid thinking how cool it would have been for a Joe Train set. Which in my mind would have been transporting some sort of weapons. I suppose the Thunderclap had orignally started out as a train.
Well I can't wait to see how you brakeit down.

Posted a 15-page sample of the greatly reduced and trimmed down document (I think the final doc will be in the neighbourhood of 200 pages, including all the dossiers, which will be about half of the length of the 400+ pages I had worked up to in the prior version). You can read it at the link below:
Used a new DUI (distinctive unit insignia), too, one that incorporates elements from the Defense Security and Cooperation Agency's official seal. It's just the intro and half of the chapter on unit organization, but figured you guys might want to see what I've been up to. I've taken out any direct connections to the Joe's aviation guys... it's the only way I can keep it a company-sized unit. I will place an appendix for external aviation transport, attack helicopter, fighter support, and maritime transport liaison officers, though, where you'll find brief dossiers for the Joe pilots and guys like Cutter and Keelhaul, and also AMEDD officers like Doc (and maybe GI Jane and Doc's niece, although I don't know if I want to go down the route of "re-naming" Joes with duplicate filenames... down that road leads to the madness that was the 400 page monster I'm now trying to prune down). Also, I based the VAMP on the Marines' IFAV (it's smaller, faster, lighter, and much more fuel-efficient than the HMMWV without sacrificing carrying capacity or power and just as important, it's ABCA-compatible). As for the HAVOC, I based it on the little-known "Warpig" vehicle used by the 5th Special Forces Group during the early days of the Iraq invasion and in Afghanistan. It's basically an LMTV, cut down so that it can easily roll-on and off C-130s and fitted with weapons mounts and extra comms gear. The GIJOE version is based on the M1081 version of the LMTV, instead of the M1078 used by SF (the M1081 is airdrop-certified, the M1078 isn't, although they're virtually indistinguishable based on external appearances). I wanted to call it the WARTHOG initially (as a nod to the "Warpig" nickname), but couldn't come up with a "backronym" that I liked that would align it with the naming convention I used for the VAMP. Of course, as in the previous iterations of the doc, I'll be including a section detailing vehicle specs (engines, performance, etc.). Tell me what you guys think. Talk about trimming the fat.
I don't know about everyone else, but I like the ass-kicking part of GIJOE the best. Great choice to make the entire team full of named field operatives. The team seems focused as all hell now. That's a nice compromise moving the characters who made this kind of organization impossible before to the appendix. Now I don't have to try to figure out how to customize admin characters and their paperwork and desks. No offense to admin types that may be reading. ;-) And I'd like to reiterate my happiness with the new function of the team. Joe is more fun when it's about slightly futuristic modern military escapism and this lets them fight the kind of COBRA I remember without having to deal with the kind of terrorists we see on the news. |
