That sounds pretty cool. I can only imagine what vehicles Cobra would get as they could have whatever the want.

I dig it as long as you don't burn yourself out doing it. I wouldn't mind it if you used the old names where they would fit on new vehicles either. ;)

The Joes would need something that doesn't attract attention (since I've written that their primary function is intelligence gathering and long range recon), so an improvised tactical vehicle would make more sense in terms of functionality. Here are some pics of Toyota Tacomas being used as "technicals" (African/Middle Eastern pidgin slang for a commercial pick-up fitted with a weapons mount) by members of the Army National Guard's 20th Special Forces Group if I'm not mistaken, in Afghanistan: Special operations units also use Toyota Hilux pick-ups (the international version of the Tacoma). The thing about the Tacoma/Hilux that makes it so useful in those remote areas of the world for military operators is that just about any half-decent automotive shop in the world carries parts for it. These guys can't wait for Humvee parts to be flown in case they need to make repairs (nor do they want the attention that comes with military re-supply). It also allows these guys to blend in, since the Hilux is the most popular pick-up truck in the world and wouldn't raise eyebrows the way a Humvee (standard US military), Mercedes G-Wagon (USMC Force Recon and many other NATO recon units), or Land Rover (SAS and 75th Ranger Regiment) would. Thinking of changing what VAMP stands for. VAMP originally stands for Vehicle: Assault, Multi-Purpose. The problem is with the use of the word "assault". In proper military parlance, "assault" as it pertains to vehicles refers to a transport whose purpose is to carry troops to and from the FEBA (front edge of the battlefield area), and GIJOE, as I've written it, doesn't really operate using conventional battlespace control measures like that. Still thinking of a new acronym meaning for it. |

Here's my putative list of GIJOE vehicles
All of the vehicles are in active US military use and are, with the exception of the Antonov (which is used as an undesignated cargo/training aircraft by the USAF's 6th Special Operations Squadron), based on COTS civilian vehicles: The MC-12W Liberty (flown by the USAF's 480th Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance Wing) is built on a Beechcraft King Air 350 frame, the Kiowa Warrior (the standard helicopter of the US Army's Aeroscout units and the Army's replacement for the venerable AH-1) is based on the Bell Model 406, and the Zodiac (used by all special operations units for beach insertion) is also sold as a commercial watercraft model. With the exception of the Antonov, all of the vehicles are designed for reconnaissance/surveillance purposes, to fit in with the overall GIJOE scheme I have written up. Still not sure about my version of the VAMP. I keep going back to the Tacoma/Hilux technicals used by the 20th SFG but they just don't look like they can stand in for the VAMP to me (although they can probably pass for a real-world equivalent of the PoC VAMP). |

Well, after a lot of deliberation (and reading about vehicle dimensions), I'm thinking of giving the GIJOE team an Alenia C-27J Spartan instead of the Antonov An-26, since the C-27J was designed so that it can actually carry a partially disassembled OH-58D Kiowa Warrior inside it. Also abandoning the Hilux idea for the VAMP and going with a modified RSOV (Ranger Special Operations Vehicle), which is basically a left-hand drive version of the militarized Land Rover Defender used by the SAS. I figure there's a real practical and functional reason why the world's premier special operations-capable airborne light infantry unit (the US Army's 75th Ranger Regiment) and the granddaddy of all modern elite counterterrorist units (the UK's SAS) use the Land Rover Defender as their wheeled tactical vehicle of choice.
Look for an update to the GIJOE document hosted on Scribd in the next couple of days incorporating data and images of the vehicles. |

Thanks Tyroc.
Was going over the Scribd document last night and noticed a bongload of typos (content ones, not format ones, so they escaped spellcheck). Will be correcting those soon as I add the vehicle pages. |

Was going to wait until I updated the Scribd document until I posted these but I might not be able to do so before the mid-week rush so here they are:
Wreckage, Fred Broca, Cesspool
Thanks for looking! |

Looks pretty good. I'm not really feeling the red suit, but it's a necessary evil.
