Heh. Yeah, "corporate-ese" makes even the most unsavoury jobs sound decent and legal. A lot of the activities that bordered on industrial espionage now falls under what companies call "business intelligence" or "competitive intelligence" or "data mining". Quote:
Notes on some of the more obscure names:
BTW, in case it isn't clear, I'm just using the names, but like what I did for the Joes, their backgrounds and "filecards" will be more grounded in current events and militaria (although I'm still aiming for a "Greatest Hits" take that I hope captures all of the important and salient features fans know and like about the characters). Oh, and Tanksmasher, the uniform as I envisioned it is supposed to be a formal dress uniform thing for use in parades, ceremonies, photo-ops and such (the crimson/maroon colour would make it impractical as a battle dress)... I'm thinking you must have missed my mentioning that in the original post. I imagine the CGs wear business suits when on duty, or if they have to go and engage in direct combat, they'd wear the same tactical vest, blue BDUs, and helmet the Vipers wear.
I probably won't make Sky Patrol, sorry (I know Loose Cannon is a big fan of Sky Patrol, too... sorry, guy). I'd originally done them (I think the pictures are still in one of my My Opera photo albums) thinking of using them as the HALO/HAHO team, but figured that there were enough pre-1990 paratroopers to make a five-man team without having to utilize the Sky Patrol characters (I've since stopped trying to force myself to accommodate characters I'm not really interested in, makes it feel too much like real work). As for Sky Patrol, that's too bad. If anyone could give them the modern updated look that they deserve it would be you. Heck, most of the works is already done, so using them might free up some other Joes for other positions. They could make up a SF HALO/HAHO team or perhaps replace the current HALO/HAHO recon team and use Flint, Crazylegs and Airborne v1 on an Air Assault Recon Team or perhaps an Air Rescue Team (a PJ type of unit). Would still love to see SP incorporated either way.

Ah yeah, I missed the part about the formal dress uniforms. In that case, the uniform style makes sense, although I always assumed that the ARAH CG uniform was an amalgamation of a dress uniform and battle uniform, a dual-role type of suit perhaps. Maybe you could consider that as a possibility and then you could use more ballistic type of helmet.

Well, if there's one thing I've learned in the course of this project, it's never to say never. I might work up the interest incorporate to Sky Patrol in the future, but at the time I was working on the document, the pressure I put on myself (and the pressure I was feeling--imagined or real--from fans of the characters I chose not to include, and it's true, every Joe, no matter how obscure, has a fan out here) to make them as detailed, interesting, plausible, and as unique as the other Joes was just sucking the fun out of the whole affair.

Anyway, here's a look at the putative organizational outline I made for COBRA (Controller-Observer Regional Assistance) Command: The thing about COBRA is that it's a stand-alone organization, unlike GIJOE which has the resources of the federal government behind it. So while GIJOE's Ft. Wadsworth facility is partially staffed by non-GIJOE personnel from the nearby Fort Hamilton, COBRA has to be staffed wholly by its own employees (so it's much larger in terms of support personnel... I imagine the ratio would be at least 5 or 6 support personnel for every Crimson Guard, VIPER, or EEL). But what exactly is a "Controller-Observer"? A controller-observer (or as they are called in the US Army and in the Canadian Forces, an "observer/controller") is an "individual tasked to provide administrative control, evaluate task performance, and provide constructive feedback to participants during a training exercise" (source: Center for Army Lessons Learned Newsletter 98-3). I imagine COBRA as an unscrupulous profiteering private military company, training and reinforcing the armies of various governments (regardless of ideological leanings), sometimes even being contracted by the US Department of Defense. Sharp-eyed readers of the above document might also notice that I've decided to make Isla Culebra ("Snake Island" in English) off the coast of Puerto Rico as the location of COBRA's primary headquarters facility, as I think it's a neat real-world conflated analogue for Cobra's first headquarters as depicted in the comics (a small, unnamed island in the Caribbean as shown in the very first issue of the Marvel GI Joe comic book from waaay back in 1982) and Cobra Island. Also, here are some updated images: Snow Serpent, VIPER (automatic rifleman version; compare him to the standard version), Crimson Guard Thanks for looking! Snow Serpent looks awesome.
Viper looks good, but I never really like the faceplate. I like the new helmet on the Crimson Guard.

All of your Cobras are great, Z, but I really like the Snow Serpent. It looks like a mix of the original toy one mixed with the ROC Ice Viper-one of my personal faves. Can't wait to see more of them.
