Both of those are great. Really capture the vintage look.

They both look awesome, z. The face on Metalhead is really fitting, and I'm digging whatever you're doing now in terms of the image quality and color values. Both images look really crisp, vibrant and cohesive. Great, GREAT work.

Hit a bit of a brick wall writing the personal text on the filecards. It's easy enough writing those up for the characters we've known and cared for all these years, but with the more obscure and derivative Joes, it's hard to come up with anything that doesn't make them sound redundant in personality and background. Anyway, working on the conceptual framework for Cobra in the meantime so I don't waste my time banging my head against the keyboard. I'm making "Cobra" an acronym. As those of you who've read the original Marvel comics probably know, the organisation's name isn't just "Cobra" like it was in the cartoons, it's "Cobra Command". Anyway, I'm re-christening the organisation as COBRA Command. COBRA Command stands for Controller/Observer Regional Assistance Command. You might be asking, whats a Controller/Observer? A Controller/Observer (or what the US Army calls Observer/Controller or O/C) is a military instructor and subject matter expert (what they used to call a lane instructor) who trains other military personnel in certain tasks. The idea is that COBRA Command is a US-based private military contracting company (think Blackwater/Xe) that trains foreign soldiers and private armies. Of course, the ugly truth of it is that what they're actually doing is helping tin-pot dictators and regional warlords (left-wing, right-wing, communist, fascist, religious fundamentalist, and all points in between) repress their citizens. The VIPER (Veteran Infantry Personnel) is the basic Controller/Observer. These are former soldiers and marines (recruited from the US and other NATO countries and non-NATO ally countries) trained and experienced in advanced infantry tactics. A VIPER squad is composed of 9 personnel: a VIPER officer and two 4-man VIPER fireteams composed of a VIPER (who serves as a fireteam leader), a Frag-VIPER (a grenadier), a SAW-VIPER (the squad automatic weapon gunner), and one fireteam has a HEAT-VIPER (the squad's anti-armor and anti-bunker weapons specialist) and the other fireteam has a Range-VIPER (the squad designated marksman). A Tele-VIPER (a radioman) is also assigned to each VIPER platoon. Crimson Guards form COBRA Command's team of elite legal experts. They use every loophole and dirty trick in domestic and international law to ensure that COBRA Command never has to face prosecution for the repercussions of their operations. All Crimson Guards are practicing lawyers and most have a military or intelligence background and a good number of them hold appointed positions in government. Still debating on whether or not I'll include Eels in COBRA Command. On the one hand, they're pretty iconic members of the Cobra organization. On the other, you don't really see a lot of mercenaries employed full-time as frogmen. What do you guys think of the framework for COBRA Command so far? |

I think COBRA works very well. On the subject of Eels (and Snow Serpents for that matter), if they're not in a project as comprehensive as this one (especially considering they came out in the "golden years") a lot of people will be scratching their heads at their omission.

Glad you're digging it. My knowledge of how PMCs work is considerably less than my knowledge of the military, so I'll be taking things a bit slower with Cobra, as it'll require a bit more reading and researching on my part.

Also, apropos of nothing, it just occurred to me how the "Eels" name could have been improved back in the day. I think Hasbro should have just called them "Sea Serpents", since it organically ties in with the fact that the Snow Serpents are actually Cobra frogmen trained in arctic warfare. You would then have two primary career tracks in the Cobra organisation: Vipers (and the various variants, such as the Tele-Vipers, Range-Vipers, etc.) for land-based infantry and Sea Serpents (and various variants such as the Snow Serpents) for frogmen and naval/amphibious infantry. |

Yeah. Personally, I think it's a minor change for the better, but methinks it might not go down well with GI Joe traditionalists (then again, GI Joe traditionalists would probably dismiss my project altogether even without that little change ).
