Good find Spook.
Also, 1 of the 25th/ME SS came with an uzi and the unreleased PoC Jungle SS came with 2 guns.

In Yearbook 3, when SS goes to rescue SE, he uses an AK-47 briefly. And in issue 96, he's shown using a MAC-10 while scaling the Cobra Consulate wall. I always figured Stormy prefers classic ninja weapons, but uses firearms when he needs to.

All the changes look good to me, z. I'm glad you seem to be happy with the structure and are adjusting the team both to fit it as well as look even more in line with their origins. Really happy to see 'Zook in his proper colors. I think that was the one character more than any other that I was having a hard time fully accepting.

Great job Z. Love the idea of the commando mortars.
It helps to show that the Joe unit is a specialized unit as they adopt methods and equipment used by other countries. Nice little touch.

The US Army did use commando mortars in World War II. But during the Cold War (where set-piece battles between two military powers was a distinct possibility), they were phased out in favour of heavier weapons with more range. I don't know if they'll ever make a come back in the US military, but I think they might find a niche use in Afghanistan (where they were used to a limited extent by Austrian troops prior to their pull out from the region). Israel's paratroopers use commando mortars as well. |

BTW, you might be curious as to why Short-Fuze and Downtown are both stepping on the carrying straps for their commando mortars. There's a practical reason for that. As you might have noticed, these mortars don't have bipod assemblies, base plates, and sighting units like your conventional US Army-issue M224 light infantry mortars (this is done to cut down on the weapon's weight and allow one man to carry it and its ammunition). This particular model of commando mortar instead uses the carrying strap as a combination stabilising and aiming/sighting mechanism. Once the soldier has secured the mortar's base (usually by shoving it into a shallowly dug hole), he pulls up the muzzle of the weapon whilst stepping on the carrying strap, thus stabilising it. Depending on where a soldier places his left foot on the strap, the angle of elevation for the mortar will also change. The strap has gradations (and markers indicating where to put one's foot) printed on it that indicate the distance a mortar round will fly depending on the angle the mortar is held. The mortar is pre-loaded by the soldier before firing and it uses a trigger mechanism so that it can be operated by one person with two hands (whereas an M224 mortar requires that the round be dropped into the barrel by hand... obviously, you'll need at least two men to operate it effectively: one man carry the bipod assembly and baseplate and stabilise the mortar during firing, and another to carry the mortar proper and drop the round into the barrel during firing).
