Looking great so far! I'd have a hard time believing you were new to Blender if you hadn't said so.

Getting used to it, I’ve watched some YouTube videos to help me along. I think I’m going to redo the front bumper now that I’ve figured out a few tricks I think it will come out better. Thanks for the kind words. I’ll keep posting updates.

Changed a lot of stuff. I wanted the vehicle to feel more jeep like. It's earlier model looked more 2 door SUV to me. So shortened the rear. Cleaned up the grill inserts some, also made a smaller sleeker looking front bumper and made some progress on the roll-cage.

Seats, spare tire currently floating in air still deciding how it's going to be connected to not interfere with opening the tailgate.

Vehicles with a tailgate and a spare tire on the back usually just have the spare on an arm that swings out to the side to allow the tailgate to drop. Like this.

So found an addon for blender that let me take measurements in real world scale so I could make necessary adjustments. Discovered my model was too narrow and its wheels were smaller than I liked. So made some adjustments.
Also going through making sure each piece of the model is manifold so it will print correctly, and doing some general cleanup on the mesh. Still have some cleanup work to do on the front clip to make it printable. But here's an updated render of where I'm at right now. I used a ruler and calipers to bring the overall scale in line with the Steel Crusher. Wheels are approximately the same size tires are a bit bigger than the Steel Crushers the body is only slightly narrower and quite a bit shorter. But should now easily fit two figures in the front seats. |

A whole lot has been done even though the fancy isometric render doesn't show it. So I thought I'd take a screenshot that shows some of the stuff I'm working on.
First off every piece has been refined a bit to clean up the mesh and check that it has volume and is manifold. There are some overhangs and such that will definitely require support material when printed. I have been trying to engineer connection points for each panel. I want it to press fit and hold if possible but I'm sure a bit of gluing will be required. In the attached photo you can see the hood is now hinged, connection points have been made to snap the gray and green pieces together mounting points have been designed for the leaf springs as well as connection points to connect the leaf spring to the axle and an axle carriage that should hold it all together as well as allow the axle to travel a bit. The suspension design is the part I'm most skeptical of and may have to trash it all in favor of a solid mounting point for the wheels but I want to try this first. (once I get a printer) This is of course all an iterative process with no way to know what I need to update until I finish and get a print. Hoping to be in a position to buy a printer by April or May, no rush though since I don't think there's a point to having a printer until I have something totally ready to print. |

I was bored with connecting things together so I created duplicate copies of a couple panels and modified them to a concept for the hard top version that will have a rear deck to support a turret. No modeled details yet but you get the picture.
The idea is to have a base model that can have modular upgrade kits applied to it to support many different roles. Last edited by matchmade; 01-31-2018 at 02:18 PM.. |
