Eerrr...
and how do you think that things work with professional work? You usually do several pages (of whatever is asked, comic pages, designs...), in a record time, usually just 2-4 days, no matter if it's xmas or new years day. And you don't get paid, you do the work for free, just to get the job. What's worst, you get lots of stupid requests, and many, many times you don't "win" *grumble* So, getting a prize (*), with a wide choice and range to work with, and the chance of more future work...well, it is appealing. Plus, indy projects have their charm. (*)-which is not small, he's not requesting something very specific, he's paying for something that you will design freely. I've worked with a variety of artists and artist-communities through the years, and I'm constantly amused by how with on-line communities, there's always a VERY particular culture that develops. The "rules" about what's cool, or even fair-play, seem to vary wildly from one message-board to another. I designed my little contest in a way that I hoped would be as enticing as possible, as painless as possible, and still fall roughly within the bounds of professional appropriateness. Quote:
-went for a more sci-fi approach
-main problem with making a new blueshirt is avoiding the use of the trademark wehrmacht-like helmet, yet finding a new badass design -applied asymmetry, for once -tried to make it simple yet complex. Hopefully it looks it. -gosh i love sketching Quote:
Just out of curiosity why not just go through the albums of people whose work you like and contact them individually. Would give you a much wider range of samples. Not saying the contest isn't good (because sponsoring them has become my passtime of late) but wouldn't the other way be quicker and easier for you?
REGARDLESS of which of these excellent entries (and they all meet all my qualifications) gets selected, I'll be very proud to see it made into my prototype, and hopefully see it packed in as a production-figure into my final-product. I also hope that I can come to an arrangement with the winning artist to do more design work as my project moves forward. Thanks again to everyone that participated and posted! WW PS. I'm going to hold off the poll for a little while to let M_renegade submit his final entry, and once he does, I'm going to bend my rules a little bit and go ahead and submit all 4 entries for the final poll. All 4 are great, and I see no reason to exclude a single artist on what would amount to nothing more than my personal opinion. Last edited by writerwolf; 04-13-2009 at 04:08 PM.. |

Plus, indy projects have their charm. I understand this was a contest targeted at people like me who are not professional... the $100 prize wasn't bad and I said that from the start. However I found the time frame to be very small for people who have 40+ hour jobs/family/lives outside of work- most contests (just take for example the contests that Hisstank.com has) have longer deadlines so the max amount of submissions can be recieved... I believe there are 4 entries (which are all good) to this contest however that isn't that many for the amount of artist that are on this board- I think that proves my point. |

Ok, base colour, and black and white. I'll post in a few moments the enhanced colour version. Hope you like it.

Awesome. I too thought about using the "urban camo" on my blueshirt's pants... but eventually ruled it out because, well... I guess I didn't want to revisit it (used it on my "realistic" interpretation of Cobra Commander).
It'll be a tough call because I think each of the designs has advantages over the rest... but I'll keep the details to myself for now! Once the contest is over, I'll speak.

Wow, all of the entries look pretty good. I know who gets my vote, but they are all good. Wish I would of seen this contest sooner, by the time I saw it my plate was pretty full. It will be cool to see who wins and see how that translates into toy form. Good luck to all!!!

Uh? What? I don't know but I find your comment to be absurd. What professional artist do you know who works for free? Professional artist work on commissions. A company chooses an artist based on a portfolio. In the professional art world you don't create work for a company/individual without the expectation of being paid... whether a piece is used or not.

All that would happen in a ideal world...or if your last name is Lee, Miller or Hitch LOL
In any case, when you do your first work, you have to do it free. What i meant is not comissions, nobody works for free (well, except me, if i really like the project LoL), but i meant submissions. Rarely a company spend time looking for someone (again, only if they have one of the big guns in mind), rather they spread word of the project. And of course, if they keep the work, you'll get paid even if it's not used. But all this works when you've been called, not when you're submitting to win a work. Also, you have to do several samples, if you don't specialize. With this, i mean that if you're skilled enough to do many styles, you still have to do the samples "for free". Let's say that...Jim Lee is interested in Resolute Duke, but they want a more mangaish style...he will have to do some extra free pages to catch up what's been requested. Of course, it would be more easier to call Madureira instead LoL. |

this is true. design projects based on a prize are called spec work. most professionals avoid these as they are considered less serious about paying. I do graphic/video work; when working for a company you get paid regardless of if a piece is used. usually, you end up doing revisions, but the artist always gets paid for their time. But this prize incentive way, is a great way for younger talent to learn their way--and build a portfolio of work.
