As the title says.
I was looking through Ebay, and I find it funny how many "new" auctions have gone up with pricing that is anywhere from "a bit too much" to "WTF!"
I remember what it was like with TFs when they started to really hit the market again with the Armada cartoon, and then again last year with the movie. It seems the 25th line and the upcoming movie have really started bringing in the "speculators" who are now starting auctions at pretty high prices thinking they will get that due the lines resurgence.
What are your thoughts?

It seems to me like there are two different types of sellers on eBay-those who are just trying to sell there stuff and those that are trying to make a profit. It used to be a few years ago that most auctions for toys were going for low starting bids and it was mostly just people selling what they had. Now, it seems like 90% of what I look for is from people with stores selling things at or above retail (and trying to make some profit by charging high shipping) or people that are trying to make money off of what they have (so they have a high starting bid). And I think the stores and 'professional' sellers are setting the bar high on what they want and then that affects what everyone else starts there stuff at. At least that's my observation. Whenever something becomes hot, people start coming out of the woodwork to sell their 'RARE!!!!!' and 'HTF!' stuff (by the way, I don't need an auction title to tell me if it's rare or not).

Wave 1 Joes are going for a hefty price these days, especially Snake Eyes w/ Timber. I've seen that Wave 4 Storm Shadow has gone past $10 now, so I suspect that'll be one of the next figures to watch.
I can't believe Snake Eyes w/ Timber is shooting past $30 though since I saw a million of those things and nothing else on the pegs when things were bleak around here.

yeah 25th stuff has "speculator prices" all over it, but the old stuff still has some deals going on.
I just got a parts lot of Surveillance Ports for $26 (shipping included) in total I came out with 1 complete Surveillance Port, one missing 3 parts and having been repaired, some more parts and two versions of the blueprints

Joe pricing is back into the cycle where it was back in late 2001 and early 2002. Back then, vintage items were going up rather quickly (remeber when any mint, complete '87 Joe would easily cost more than $20?) and recently shipped items that were no longer at retail were going for stupid prices. In late '01, I sold 2 MOC Firefly/Undertow packs on Ebay. One went for $65 the other went for $75. What are those worth today...$12? The reality was that the new collectors who came in were panicking that they had missed stuff and were paying stupid prices to get it. In time, the line simply outpaced their spending in terms of new figures released and, most of the old figures were released with new paint jobs or as straight up re-releases.
To me, it's really amazing how history is repeating itself right now in the Joe market. The upside is that you could get great deals back then if you bought outside of the interest of the new collectors and the same is true today. I've found some great deals on Ebay on vintage stuff in recent months and have even been able to make some decent profits by selling the 25th crap.
The key is to buy what the others are not currently interested in. For example, I've been stockpiling vintage Stinger Drivers for about $7 each in recent months. Most people aren't interested in that figure since the Legions SD's are available. Once those dry up a bit, the price on the vintage will go back to about $12 which its historical range. But, in the meantime, I've picked up a bunch of high quality figures for about 1/2 of their long term value. So, since deals like that are out there, I'm not too upset about an upswing in overall Joe pricing.

it's all profit-based. my favorite is how they jack up the shipping costs. that really burns me. i gave up on some auctions i really wanted just because the shipping costs were so high. i've been to the post office, and i've shipped some pretty massive packages. to ship a couple of carded figures should never cost more than $8, and that's only if it's put into a larger package to protect against damage. pirates!!

I wonder if the price hike will stay up until the Movie or if it'll go down a bit.

I love the 25th line but it has jacked up the prices of the vintage ones.
Even more and with the movie coming up I predict prices are going to increase even more.

no kidding, i've seen shipping quotes as high as $20 for some lots. maybe if you shipped them in a wooden crate would it cost $20...

The thing is, it has to be worth a seller's while to sell on eBay, and with fees being the way that they are, it gets tougher. I personally add about 1-2 dollars above what I anticipate the shipping costs will be into my shipping fees to cover some of these other things. I'm not a huge seller, mind you, I just put up some of my stuff every few months or so. But, I do want to make some money (so that I can buy more stuff), and the costs of eBay have to be taken from somewhere.
Obviously, 20 dollar shipping for an item that costs 8 bucks to ship is another story, but I can certainly understand charging more for "shipping" than actual shipping costs alone.
