Looks like e-bay is finally changing its tune a little. I just got this message in my inbox on my e-bay account.
"Starting March 30, 2010 selling on eBay will be a better deal than ever! * List Auction-style FREE--no Insertion Fees--when you start your Auction-style listing under $1. * Get new, lower Insertion Fees for all other start prices. * Either way, pay one easy Final Value Fee of 9% of the winning bid (but never more than $50)-and pay only if your item sells. * List in Fixed Price for 50ยข, with Final Value Fees for the most part staying the same. This new standard fee structure will replace the current "first 5 listings free"--you'll pay no Insertion Fees whenever you list Auction-style and start pricing under $1!* Get complete details on the new eBay fees and get ready to SELL!

I still hate how Paypal holds your funds until the person receives the item though, and the fact that sellers can't leave negative feedback for buyers.

I've noticed that they only withhold the funds on items over a certain amount, usually $99. Its a fairly recent thing. As a seller it can be frustrating, but I remember before they put that rule in, I bought a vintage Video game for over $100 and the seller never sent me the game, so I agree with it. It would be nice to have the ability to leave a warning note regarding bad buyers, but as long as the guy pays on time, he's already done his part. |

Uh, the 9% flat final value fee is higher than anything they've ever charged, and will no doubt be more expensive for the seller than the extra 45 cents you(or I) would've spent on the initial listing fees.
The deal with their old five free auctions with no insertion fee, was a bad scam because it took 8.75%(which was their highest %) out of the auction, no matter the selling price. The old structure outside of those five was 8.75% of the first like $25, then it dropped to 7% up to $50 or so, then down to like 5.5% after that. So from that scam, to this new 9% charge, eBay is actually f*cking us worse than they were before. Who is going to be willing to start all their auctions below $1? I can't see putting up a $30 item and starting the bid at $.99, when you're likely to set the BIN price at $28 or so. Then you know some dumbass is going to bid $.99, and you've wasted the money on the BIN fee, AND you're going to wait the full week(or whatever) for the auction to end. Bad move for us, I'm afraid. We the seller get f*cked worse and worse everytime eBay farts in the wind. And of course, the classic complaint, that they took away our right to leave anything except positive feedback. If only there were an alternative, but as it stands now, we all just have to bend over and take it. The biggest problem, though, is going to be explaining to customers why prices are higher(because of eBay's 9% fees) and the shipping is higher(USPS increased their package shipping costs, and add-on services like Delivery Confirmation, as enticement to get you to use Priority Mail.) |

So um...how is this better for sellers ? ebay used to charge 8.75% of $1 to $25. Then any amount from $25.01 to Etc. would be an additional 3.75% of the reaming $25.01 to etc. So if you sell an item for $100 you would get charged 8.75% of 25 which is $2.18 then 3.75% of the reaming $25.01 to $100 which is $2.81 total ebay fee $4.99. now it will be a flat 9% so if you sell an item for $100 you will pay $9 guess what your fee just doubled. Am I wrong ? please tell me if I am. I have been selling on ebay occasionally for 4 years.
