While I do appreciate customs ... buying them is too rich for my blood, so I don't even bother making a bid.

when i was painting back in the day I showed my to the local comic/toy shop they liked it and asked to display it to try and help sell their models. of course i started to get soem of my supplies free for letting them display them. but that did lead to sales right from the shop and custom orders for diff model kits. maybe there is a local shop you deal with that might display some, of course they might want some of your slice of the pie though but just a suggestion
For starters, you can't go local. YOU NEED BIG SCREEN ! You need access and excess! This is a very limited calling. You need the sites. Hisstank, BrokenArrow, Yojoe. whatnot. I tried the same thing with TF custom jobs back when TRU had their exclusives. Most I got was a 50 Buck com for a Tigerstrike Custom made from a RedAlert. BLAH

What I have learned in the past three years is that like any hobby that you try to make a little coin on.....you have to love it!! I love making customs and if I didnt I couldnt keep doing it....I have about 12 different people that buy a lot from me but sometimes Ill go two or three weeks without selling one then BAM!!!!sell 20 in a week.....its pretty inconsistant so the love for making them takes over until I sell some again.....I know a lot of customizers...hisstank...broken arrow....trigate...the was you get your product out is getting it to those different sites and I like beeting new customizers and friends....I went to the convention this year and took 350 customs...I wasnt sure how Id do but in the end I did pretty well...I sold enough for a little coin but most importantly I met a lot of joe fans that have seen my work and now they can put a face with it...and several that have bought off me in the past...that is what its really all about...(PS I know someone that price gouges their auctions so dont believe all those high prices that the auctions end up with anyway...thats why I use buy it now) so if you dont like to do it and of course you dont cheat in your auctions dont plan on paying your rent with you earnings...but to pay it everyother month....I would consider that to be doing good... Customs have taken over my life!!! lol..I better like making them... just my 2 cents...for what its worth.

it's completely random, dude. i've seen customs that look like complete crap go for ridiculous amounts of money. hell, i've been selling imperial knights with simple head swaps for $25 a pop; how crazy is that? all i can say is have fun with your customizing, start your figs off at the least you're willing to take for them and even throw on a crazy BIN for that collector that's got money to blow...

For someone who buys customs because I can't paint a lick I mostly look for something I know:
1. Hasbro may never make 2. Is a better looking version than what Hasbro made. (a non yellow versioin of any character) 3. Play ready and few paint flaws. |
