Though I think I can top this, right before Circuit City closed up shop, they had a big sale, naturally. What I found odd was that they were still selling gift cards with a big "All Sales Final" sign hanging from them.

for christmas someone gave me a $25 walmart card. i went online to some site and bought two cobra divers using my debit card. i gave the walmart card to my wife as "payment" for the debit card purchase. she used it at walmart like paying $25 cash upfront on the total.
maybe the seller would just rather parlay the giftcard into paypal funds and is willing to take a loss to do so.
