So I wanted to ship two packages that I had sold on eBay via USPS that I had hauled all the way from NJ to NY. I created a shipping label for each package last night, not knowing that the default date of the shipping label (which is the day you purchase/print your label) would be so critical after all these years of not being so important. So I go to the post office to have the packages scanned since the last time I had shipped Priority Mail without being scanned, the pacakge got lost.
When I speak to the clerk, the clerk says that she can't accept the package because the label's shipping date had yesterday's date when I had printed the label less than 24 hours ago. I told the lady I had just printed it off last night around 9 PM when the Post Office was closed. Did the shipping rate change between last night and this morning? She couldn't give a better reason other than that was their rule. The shipping date on the label had to be the same day when packages are accepted by the USPS at the post office. After arguing with her for a few minutes and then her supervisor, and even offering to pay a "late fee" and asking them to forgive me just this once, since this was my first time and no one had made an announcement, they turned me down. I had to go back to my office, cancel the labels through Paypal, ask for a refund from USPS (it takes at least 15 business days), reprint the labels using the same addresses, dimensions but the shipping date as today, paid the same amounts that I did last night, resticker the packages with the new labels over the old labels, and then went back to the Post Office, where they finally accepted package, even if the labels were exactly the same other than the shipping date. Now I think I know how my last Priority Mail package before today's events got lost. I had printed the label on a Saturday evening. Then I gave it to my office mailing department the following Monday. When they gave it to the Post Office, the Post Office probably refused it because of the different dates but if they did, shouldn't they have mailed the package back to me, instead of losing it? Has this ever happened to anyone else recently? I told the Post Office people, how silly and a tremendous waste of time, effort and resources as a result of this policy. They didn't disagree. So the next time you ship, I would advice you to choose the shipping date as the exact date you plan on dropping the package off at the Post Office. Even one day old isn't good enough for USPS. |

Thanks or the heads up, I just went to the PO with a label I printed 8 days ago and they didnt say anything. I usually ship same day or switch the shipping date but sometimes I am a day off. Nobody ever said anything to me.

No idea on that CG76, we ship a lot of packages, all of them priority. Which most of them are not picked up till the following business day. Sometimes that means the following Monday for a label that may have been printed on Friday or as late as Thursday. Never have we had a box refused.
Just so you guys know, we ship to residences and businesses and anywhere from 1 to 15 boxes over a days time. |

Maybe they're location is on the cutting block and they're in a bad mood and sticking it to the tax payer.

If you are going to the post office anyway, why not just pay for the shipping there?

I had the same problem about a year ago in new york. They turned me away I just went to my post office in Jersey the next day and they accepted the package. The Hoboken Post Office has great lobby hours and they are even open on Sundays. You can just use the drop box for your packages if you are printing the labels at home.

You may want to get Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson involved.
