Ok, please bare with me as I vent some Nerd Anger:
Here's what kills me about eBay & feedback: If you're a buyer, you'd naturally expect feedback once you've made payment. You've completed your end of the transaction. As a Seller, you are expected to leave feedback once a person pays. Well, why are sellers labeled as "Feedback Hostage Holders" when they don't leave feedback right away? Is it really so hard for buyers to leave feedback once they've received their item(s)? I've always left feedback the minute a person pays and/or once I've shipped their package. As of today, I'm waiting on feedback from 20 different people....ranging all the way back to July 21st. Yet God forbid if certain buyers don't receive feedback immediately. They then accuse you of holding their feedback hostage. I mean, granted, you'll always have a schmuck of a seller that will hold your feedback as hostage intentionally. 9 times out of 10, they use feedback as a retaliatory measure when you leave a negative feedback rating for them (ie - look at my feedback. Both negatives I have are retaliatory from eBayers who I left negatives for...and RIGHTLY SO). I'm really getting tired of having to send e-mails to buyers asking them to leave feedback for me as I've left for them. So, I guess my question is: Is it wrong to hold feedback until it's been received? |

I would say no.
If someone doesnt leave feedback after they get the item its ridiculous. I always leave feedback right after I open the item as I look at the auction to make sure it is the same item with all the accessories.

if i buy, and pay in a timely fashion, i wait for feedback from the seller and then reciprocate. if they never issue feedback, oh well.

i don't.
i will not leave feedback until the buyer gets the item and is happy. if he was to leave a negative (impossible since i'm 100% with all my auctions in honesty and quality of item), i do the same...period. i've never , ever had a negative...except for one little f***ing punk that if i catch him, he's a goner...who sent me a fake (bootleg) of a cd already had, and he didn't know it. i wanted a double...that's all. other than that, i have feedback from about 85% of all my transactions and i do email them everyday until i get some. THEN i leave them some (if i was the seller in that auction) if i'm the buyer, i leave feedback when i receive the item, then politely ask for some in return. 90% of them usually are cool and return the feedback no problem. honestly, most buyer's forget, they need a reminder and they gladly do it. i don't hurt to email for feedback. i'm at like 151, should be like 184...not to bad. As a buyer:
Once I pay for my item, I expect to get positive feedback from the seller. After all, I did my part as a buyer. Yet they wait, in case I leave a neg. That to me screams that they are a bit shady. However if I see that they are a big business or are selling a lot of items, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt as they are busy. The only reason I would leave a neg is if they sent me the wrong item and will not fix it or even email me in person. Honestly, I'm a very understanding person. If I get a smashed item, I know it's sometimes not their fault. It might be the post office or UPS. But if they stuff a mint '83 Scarlett in a plain unpadded envelope and expect it to get to me undamaged, then yes, they will get a negative feedback. (This actually happened, I received an envelope filled with 1983 Scarlett dust because the post office made love to the envelope or something.) Most of the time I leave neutral. However, if I leave them a neg, then I know I run the risk that they'd leave me one. (Hasn't happened yet) That's not fair. I paid, promptly. I provided my shipping address, my email address and followed through. I did everything right. If they did not, then they are at fault and that's the reason for the neg feedback. As a seller: I do most of my transactions via Paypal, so when they pay, I leave positive feedback the second I move the money to my bank account. Paypal and eBay are pretty good about their design and have it all there ready to go. If they pay by check or money order, then I wait for it all to clear before I ship and leave feedback. That's not holding feedback hostage. What if the guy was writing bad checks? The eBay community needs to know that. (I actually don't accept checks anymore because of that.) I've gotten a few email reminders from sellers and buyers when I've forgotten to leave feedback. That's a good way to handle it. PS: I've been on eBay since Feb of 1999 and have a 333 positive feedback rating. 100% positive. I'm one of the good guys.

Same here, Xero. I've been on eBay for quite some time. It just irritates me when Feedback isn't returned. I can understand that people are busy and all that Jazz...but really, how long does it take to log in to eBay and handle your business, ya know?
Unfortunately, I'm going to become a bit more militant when it comes to feedback. I will once again inform buyers that they will receive feedback only when it has been received. Now, remember, I said I'm waiting on feedback from 20 people. That # doesn't include all the feedback that hasn't been left and is now "gone" due to time running out. I think I'm owed something like 100 feedback points. |

sorry. There have been hundreds of times I haven't gotten feedback from someone. No sweat off my sack. The shady part comes from when I pay for my auction, I did my part to the fullest, but do not get feedback until I post a positive for the seller. My feedback as a buyer should only come from if I paid or not. If I did, then a positive feedback should be issued no matter what. But I completely understand why that doesn't happen. And I do not judge anyone for doing it that way.
