Jinx was one of my favorite vintage figures growing up. I don't have a v1 any more (or any vintage figures) and my Joe collection is all modern. That created a problem because the best Jinx is extremely rare (the 2012 red convention version) and the most common one has a ridiculous paint scheme (Retaliation).
So I decided to finally try to paint a Retaliation Jinx. I bought one that was fairly cheap on eBay and when she arrived, I was quite struck how truly awful the figure's color scheme actually was. It's not that she's yellow and black (I get that was a costume she had in the film). It's that the yellow and black is painted over a body sculpt that is clearly intended to be the SDCC version. It's just a terrible look, with uneven stripes and sloppy apps. Here is my yellow Jinx before I began to paint. Customizing her into a red Jinx is pretty straightforward. You just paint her red. I used Vallejo's base red. There are some decisions to make about what parts (if any) to leave black and what to do about the neck (flesh colored, red, or black). After I started, I quickly decided not to paint her fully red. I wanted some black highlights to remain. But I wanted the head to be red. That meant the neck couldn't be black, so I went with Vallejo Pale Flesh. The black on the original scheme is actually fairly hard to cover. It took several coats of red. And even then, you can still see the parts that are black. I think it actually creates kind of a cool shadowing or wash effect, so I didn't make a huge effort to paint over it. Here she is as a WIP: I used a MTF Valkyrie body to hold the head as I was painting it. After a few coats and some touch up, I was ready to apply a Testor's Dullcote. Sadly, I ran out right after starting. So I can't quite finish her until I get some more from Amazon or Michael's (which I think are back open). It's hard to finish a paint job like this without out it because you have to move her joints around to see how much paint rubs off and how to touch it back up. I'm actually very satisfied with this. I think I will leave the gloves black (I like the contrast). And I think I will skip going back and doing thin black lines at the chest and neck (painting a straight line is actually one of my major weaknesses as a painter). The only things left to do are apply dullcote and move the arms and legs around a lot and touch up as needed before applying more dullcote.

Looks good so far. Do you have the weapons from that version or something else in hand?

The listing came with two Sais and that two headed spear she usually has. I think I will supplement that with some Marauder swords ultimately. It's interesting. In the pictures, it looks like quite a lot of touch up is needed under the eyes (a super daunting task), but in hand, it doesn't look like so much black is visible. I also realized looking at the pictures, that I could go back and paint the straps on her feet (which were yellow originally) black to add a little contrast. I'm kind of torn on whether that will be worth it.

Thanks for all the good wishes.
Of course, right after I get this going, the first affordable red Jinx ever popped up on eBay, so now I will have two I guess. I will definitely still finish this. I got the dullcote today and put on the first coat. I'll move the arms and legs around some to see where the paint is going to rub off and keep re-painting and putting on the coating until it doesn't all rub off each time you re-pose her.

Here is the current state of my Jinx, next to the real red modern version.
I'm still fighting the paint, trying to keep it from rubbing off whenever I move a joint, but I'm following some advice and letting it sit for a long time. A question for people who have the SDCC Jinx I'm showing: Is her body always tilting to the side like in the pic? It seems to me that's how she's designed to stand (the little black line down the front wouldn't match up otherwise) and I can't get the upper torso to slide. Is she designed to stand up straight? Should I try some hot water to get that upper torso moving side to side?
