An ongoing project I unintentionally began detailing in a project discussion thread (see http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...escue-rig.html for pics). I thought I should probably get this set up in its own thread.
To recap, (in no particular order) I’ve trimmed out some of the gyrosphere ramp to enable installation of a flat floor inside of the cab. I removed the top/rear handrail assembly and built a roof to enclose the cargo area. I trimmed away the bulkhead between the cab and cargo area to make one internal compartment. I’ve filled in some of the annoying dinosaur claw marks. And I destroyed an Elite Force armored HMMWV for parts. I’m currently working on troop seats in the rear. I have two more of these vehicles to do after I finish this one; I’ve been cutting out some parts in sets of threes as I go along to try and help expedite things once I get the first one finished and work all the bugs out. This one is going to be the command vehicle while the other two will be troop carriers. I’ve mostly finished one set of troop seats for this one - and that’s all it will get. The opposite side will have commo equipment. The seats fold up for extra cargo space.

I'll have to add some spacers between the seats to keep them evenly spaced, but this is just a test fit to make sure everything works correctly. Fairly happy with the end result. I also would like to attach seat belts with a 4-point harness. I've been looking for some professional ones that might work, but I don't know how far off in scale I can get with them still looking alright. I've seen some in 1:12 scale that might be okay, but I'd hate to spend money on something I might not be able to use. I need to take a trip to a craft store to see if there are some fasteners I could use; fabricating straps should be easy enough.

What about using zip ties for straps? Just clip out the locking piece inside the tab so you can slip the end in without it trapping the figure.

Just an idea, but I saw a Hum-Vee custom on FB using the Armadillo turret. It looked pretty cool! You might look into using it for the turret on you JW vehicle.

Minstrelboy - just curious if getting one of these and not modifying it is worth it in your opinion? The shell of the vehicle looks great but that gyrosphere action where the seats would be kind of killed the enthusiasm I had.

I almost pulled the trigger on one of these today at TRU for half off and couldn't do it for this reason. Such a waste of a great looking vehicle.

I have not started modifying mine yet but it looks like a pretty easy project in comparison to most of my customs.

This vehicle is a great one to customize. It looks like it would fit in the Joe World and the plastic is soft making it easy to cut. Mine is taking forever because I can’t quite get it to my perfection standards. One mistake I made was I should have stopped after 1 coat of paint. The finish on the paint looked great. When I tried a 2nd coat it just didn’t stick right.
I’m going to keep working on it. I like it enough that if/when these clearance I may start over.

Yeah, if it goes on clearance, I might get one to mod. I was very disappointed in how they made this though. Before knowing about the interior, this was my most anticipated vehicle of the line. Now I'll only get it on clearance.

I really like the vehicle, despite the weird action feature choice that nixed any kind of functional interior. Even used as-is, it looks good next to your figures. So yeah, you can’t put figures into a seat, and even if you could - there are no functional doors, so you’d have to use the opening front end to put them inside. And I think that was the intent behind the design: there’s a diamond-plate pattern on the hood underside and the undersized JW figure pegs to stand figures up throughout. So maybe just stand up your Joes on their stands? I dunno. Like I said, it’s still a very good-looking machine and pretty accurate in scale.
