It's at times like this that I really wish I had my own 3d printer...

Here is a complete shroud and vanes set to take a WHALE with only the fans and gearbox and make it fully outfitted in the rear:
This set includes the following parts:
The price for a complete setup like this - with new hinged vertical vanes rather than the "living hinge" original vanes - would run about $75. Skipping the shrouds and just doing the complete vanes setup (both sides), I can bring the cost down to about $42. I was hoping to do better, but the machine space costs are just eating me up on the prices for these. Still, that ends up being $17 less than that guy on eBay selling the custom vane sets with the WHALE and GI Joe logos on them. But his don't have corrected hinges. In fact, they don't even have the "living hinge" and appear to be simply static vertical vanes. Like I said, I was hoping to beat that price by a wider margin than that. But it is what it is. So, to the operative question: Do you guys think this is worth that price? I need to sell several of these to make back the money it costs to do a test print (and if the first try isn't a slam-dunk, I'll have to sell twice as many). If I can't sell any of these I'll just be burning cash making test prints for no reason so I need to know if this is worth trying. Are there any ready buyers at that price?

I just need the vanes... the parts that were destined to break when they were developed.
Would doing just those keep your cost down?

You aught to find a fellow Joe fan that has a decent printer and go in together on costs and profits to keep the cost down. If y'all split the cost of the filament it would be a decent arrangement with you doing the design work and him using his machine and running the prints when you had something. Just saying cause that is what i would, and no I dont have a printer.

I uploaded some vertical vanes-only models and it looks like pricing would end up at about $7.50 per vertical vane (or $28 for a full set of 4 vertical vanes). That price would be the same for straight reproduction vanes or the updated hinged vanes. Quote:

The parts I sell on Shapeways are almost all done with industrial grade SLS printers that have the benefit of better strength across layers (filament printers can't print a thin rod standing vertially without having a serious durability problem...one slight bend of the rod and SNAP!...orient the thin rod on its side and you end up having to print supports all around it that you then have to cut off and sand down the scars from later), less visible print strata, and the total lack of any need for adding supports. Filament printers would have their place for me in making larger and less-detailed parts, particularly since Shapeways makes larger parts cost-prohibitive to print, but by no means would a single filament printer suffice. Someone would need to have around $12,000-$15,000 worth of equipment hanging around to handle it all.

love all your work! Very impressive. Did you ever try or consider to produce the flaggs elevator bar?

Nope, I haven't looked into that one before now. It seems like a very simple piece though. How long is it from end to end?

not sure on the length, but i can look into it for you. I don't have one for my flagg and the sell for ridiculous amounts on ebay.I would believe it would be a money maker for you. Thanks for the reply.

Well, the reason I ask is that I have maximum dimensions available for printing (in the case of a higher strength material that would be needed for a long support like this, the max print length is just under 15") so before I try to borrow one of those pieces I would need to know if it will even be possible to print a part of sufficient length to suit the task. If the part is over 15" long, then it's a no-go with the available print sizes I can use. If you can find that info and let me know that would be a great help and the first step toward the availability of a reproduction part for that support.

If I remember correctly, IIRC, it's 15 inches and maybe a tiny bit more. You might need to make it two pieces that snap together somehow in the middle.
