So, I finally got around to ordering one of my own 1:18 chess board sets. I figured I would share the results and the journey as I slowly, painfully try to paint some tiny little squares on a tiny little chess board.
Here is step 1, the initial unpacking: Step 2, detach the sprued chess pieces from the board: Step 3, place chess board off to the side and pretend you don't have to worry about painting 64 little squares. Instead, simply admire the tiny little easy-to-paint pieces on the sprue: More to come as the pain(t) starts to flow...

Looks cool and can’t wait to see some results. Where did you get the chess board from?

I got it from Shapeways. It's one of my printed designs.

I am, again, mad jelly. Very nice! I would imagine getting everything all set up for a game would be a nightmare at that size...

Thanks guys.
In terms of setup, I modeled the board with 64 "pre-drilled" pilot holes on the underside lined up with each square on top. Then, the bases of the pieces were made the same diameter as the holes in the board and were also made "too long" on purpose to account for the thickness of the board. The excess base length becomes a mounting peg. The idea is to take a small drill bit and complete the pilot holes for any space in which a piece will be placed. Then once everything is painted just push each piece down until the bottom of the "peg" is flush with the bottom of the board and that way the pieces will be self-leveling. That way, the board can be set up in any configuration desired. Painting should be easier since the squares get painted with no pieces in the way and the pieces get painted in a single-color sprue (if you snap the overall pieces sprue at two opposite corners). Extra pieces can have the peg trimmed down so they can act as off-board pieces.

Wow. Nice!!! To limit painting, can you buy 2 sets of pieces, one printed in white plastic, and one printed in black plastic? Then you only need to paint 32 squares black or vise versa.

I'm not sure that their basic white material will adequately hold the details on the chess pieces so I haven't actually tried that one so far...but it's an available option.
