Finally got back to the project. Spent some time this morning planning/detailing the forward interior. Started out by building some vertical supports that will be used to stow gear and mount the turret platform for the gunner.

Then I started working on the driver/shotgun seating arrangement. Seats are out of the EF M1114 Armored Humvee.
Then I installed the dash - bashed out of the same Humvee. Steering wheel and computer display are temporarily removed until I'm ready to put it all back together. I have trouble finding the time to really get into this project, and I've been kind of sorting out how to proceed in my head the past few weeks. This - like I've said before - is the first of 3 total that I'll be working on. This will be the "XM" version, most likely used for command and communication purposes (hence only three seats on one side of the rear). I'm working out all the bugs on this custom before getting into either of the other two. I also realized that the real-life Caiman MTV doesn't slope at the rear like these JW vehicles do. I won't correct that on this one, but I probably will on the other two troop carriers. And it will make building the rear door much easier.

I'm wondering if there's going to be some issue when I get around to painting this, as the upper body plastic is extremely soft and flexible. I might try to paint a piece and see how it holds up. My primary concern is that it will retain a tacky quality, as I've had issues in the past with softer plastics for figure vests and the like.
I made a little more progress this afternoon, cutting away the center rear that keeps the mid-body section one piece. I was worried this might take away the structural integrity of the body until I get the rear panel built, but it really doesn't. I may have to come up with some sort of extender for the rear steps. The distance from step to ground is pretty vast for a 1:18 scale figure.

I used Krylon Paint & Primer combo that is for plastics.
I think I’ll use my airbrush from now on but I have had pretty good luck with certain plastics and horrible luck with others. The Retaliation Ninja Battle Cruiser is a good example. Krylon will not stick to that plastic. But it stuck great to the Retaliation Moccasin.

I bought mine at TRU at a good discount: paid $21. for me, that price is worth the sphere action corrective work. I love the look of this vehicle. Hasbro would have made this a repaint back in the 80's. There are a lot of JP vehicles with potential. Also, check out Jonny Quest vehicles and gear.

Yeah, I’ve had mixed results with the “for plastic” Krylon spray paints. Most have been pretty good, but one can seems to dry tacky, for whatever reason. Maybe a bad batch?

Finally had some time to continue working on this project. I had to call off work Thursday while the plumber came and replaced the hot water heater in my apartment, so I was able to begin constructing the rear enclosure.
Started with the bottom, then the top. As I mentioned before, the actual Caiman has a side profile that is almost perfectly vertical at the rear, but since this is my "XM" model, it will be slightly different from the other two I complete in the future. Then I began cutting out the rear entry hatch. I false fit it together with some tape initially, and had to back-fill a couple spots for the lower half so it will fit more smoothly once I'm ready to make this a permanent part of the vehicle. It's a little low for modern era figures, but that's the space you have to work with. Could perhaps cut out the top step in the next two to give more room for a larger entry way. Once I got everything squared up, I cut out some reinforcing supports and I have to admit - I'm pretty impressed by how nicely it fits as one piece. Every little bit of progress made gets me more excited to have this completed.
