Well, I finally purchased the last of my "holy grail" vehicles! My three "holy grail" vehicles have been (1) Bbi Apache 1/18 helicopter (check), (2) Bbi Hind-E gunship (check), and (3) Dino Hunter Sky Crane Helicopter (now check!).
So, kind of on the heels of Davestro's awesome Cobra Sky Crane, I will be uploading my work in progress images in this thread! My Dino Copter seems to have already been slightly customized. The engine was painted silver and the rotor blades seem to have been painted. No problems there because this baby is getting the work over! So, in the meantime I've been doing some research into the Cobra Sky Crane. Best I can tell, the Cobra Sky Crane first appeared in Yearbook 2 in this iconic picture: The Cobra Sky Crane and those awesome Oktober Guard vehicles are why YB2 will remain my favorite Marvel comic issue. As you can see the Sky Crane is presented in a light purple color, with twin "chin" guns, a "shark tooth" paint scheme on the cockpit, and a "tail-fin" on the underside of the tail rotor. The Sky Crane appears again in Issue 50 during the "Battle of Springfield" almost identical to its first appearance in YB2. The Sky Crane pops up again in other issues, sometimes colored blue But still retaining the basic look of how it first appeared in YB2. The Sky Crane even appears in European Missions in its classic purple color. And again in Yearbook 3, with a big Cobra emblem on the back. At least once the Sky Crane was drawn with a single barrel, Gatlin "chin gun" It seems the colors at Marvel when back and forth from purple to blue to purple, and the Sky Crane appeared both with and without the "shark teeth." The Sky Crane was even used to transport HISS Tanks (and WORMS in another issue). But the basic shape of the Sky Crane remained the same. One thing to notice about the Sky Crane is that engine underneath the rotor is covered, and has a smooth intake unlike the big twin "bull horns" of the real-life Sikorsky S-64 Sky Crane. So, my plans to custom the Dino 'Copter into a Cobra Sky Crane include: 1. Customizing the engine by removing the "bull horns" and adding an engine cover (from Eaglehawk) with smooth intake. 2. Paint the body, including black plastic windshield piece, in a light purple. I think to-date, Davestro's is the only custom I've seen in the iconic purple color. 3. Painting the "shark teeth" on the front. The toy sculpt has a lot of ridges and bumps that would make using a big enough sticker awkward. 4. Adding a custom twin-barrel "chin gun," I've had a Sigma Six Zartan gun put back for years just for this project. 5. Adding tail-fin wings to the bottom side of the rotor tail. 6. Adding partial wall sections to the detachable cargo box, and painting the cargo box black. 7. Add computer console from Eaglehawk to the cockpit, and ladder rungs to each side of cockpit. 8. Stickers from Cobra Sticker's custom Sky Crane (Eaglehawk) sticker pack. Well, stay tuned to this thread for updates. I'll try to post something at least weekly if not a few times a week. Congrats on tracking down your 3rd holy grail. Looking forward to seeing its progress. Out of curiosity, how or where did you track the sky crane down? Is it still in production and available at retail?

Woah deja vu. I thought your post was a necro bump
Someone else on the forums posted this perhaps you can find some ideas from their work as well. This seems like a really good custom platform. Davestro went light purple if you go through the thread. http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...elicopter.html |

Not much progress so far. I have purchased the paint and stickers for this project. Currently my main focus is customizing the engines. I just do not like the fog horn look of the stock motor. So I've removed the fog horns and have been playing around with utilizing the engine cover from the Eaglehawk. Not quite satisfied with it. So I'm going to look at some other ideas. May end up not using the stock engine at all in lieu of making my own covered engine. Worse case scenario is to just put some PVC caps back on the stock engine instead of using the fog horns.
Any ideas or suggestions are welcome! Jason Last edited by jlw515; 07-02-2021 at 08:40 AM.. |

Couple of pics with the stock engine minus the fog horns and engine cover to give an idea of how it might look.
Give me your honest thoughts on what you think! Thanks, Jason Last edited by jlw515; 07-02-2021 at 08:40 AM.. |

There is a version of the Sikorsky Sky Crane that doesn't have the bull horns - CH-54B. Instead it has these angled, rectangular boxes. May just be easier to customize something like this.

I too am not crazy about the fog horns. This box idea, incorporating some screening, could be the way to go. It actually looks more modern and military. The eaglehawk piece could work too. Keep it tight in and again, fill the center area with screen. One of the Cobra pics shows a similar large intake.
