I think I have found a solution to customizing a covered engine for the Sky Crane! I cut this out from a Nestle chocolate milk powder canister. It has the same basic shape as the engine cover from the comic, and I've cut it down to a sleek height that I think goes with the scale of the toy.
Now I have to figure out whether to attach the covered engine as a permanent fixture or make it removable so that I can swap it out with the standard toy engine. I'll customize the engine exhaust from some CPVC fittings. The comic usually shows the exhaust behind the main rotor. You can also see in one pic where I have sketched the outline for the shark teeth. As stated in an earlier post, I'm going to paint the shark teeth deco because the sculpt of the toy would make an accurate sticker fit weird. I think my Dino Copter may have been slightly customized by the previous owner. It looks like the cockpit seats were originally a dark green and they painted them a light grey. Either that or Chap Mei molded them in dark grey and then painted them. Either way, it saves me from painting the seats later on. Thanks for the comments thus far. Comments, critiques, questions are not only welcome but encouraged - especially critiques! I'm not scared or offended by honest critiques. Thanks again. Jason |

That should work. Planning to use the original exhaust outlets behind the cover?
It's coming together. |

Coming along nicely, JLW!!! Can't wait to see your version. This was a holy grail for me as well. Here is my version:

I ended up using Raginspoon's Gyro-Viper kit to customize some modern versions to pilot my Skycrane. Also found a huge chin gun from a C.O.R.P.S. raft from Walmart.

Davestro,, thanks for commenting and following this thread! I watched in eagerness for updates while you were working on your custom! As the first customized, that I know of, to publish a comic accurate purple Sky Crane you are the official "Godfather" of custom Cobra Sky Cranes that follow.
I used that same gun on my custom RHINO. I've got a gun I've been holding on to for quite some time that I'm going to customize for the chin gun. I think it came from a Zartan Sigma Six figure. It's a double barrel gun that I think mounted to his arm. As far as pilots go, I'm just going to utilize the two Retaliation Cobra Ninja (digital camo) figures. I prefer the look of the original Cobra troops, so these Ninja guys don't fit in with my Cobra infantry. The comic shows different troops piloting the Sky Crane. One even shows Techno-Vipers. But I do like that you've got a uniform look for your pilots! Thanks again for your comments! Jason |

I've got some quick picks today of the painted Sky Crane body. I painted an area of the "chin" red, and then masked it off to the shape of the "shark mouth." Then I painted the body with Krylon Maxx "Gum Drop" spray paint. Once the "shark mouth" is completed and the stickers are applied, I will add a final spray of clear matte finish to the 'copter.
Sorry for the lighting in the pics, I snapped these in my garage this morning before heading to work. This picture came out darker for some reason. I'll have to do a little touch-up with the red. I'll free hand the white teeth and black outlines. I may have to scrap or compromise one of my ideas due to the scale of the toy. My plan was to use staples for electrical wire as ladder rungs on each side of the cockpit. However, the staples that are small enough to fit usually have some sort of plastic guard and don't really look like ladder rungs. So, I'm gonna have to look for different staples now. Again, comments, questions, suggestion, and critiques encouraged. Thanks for following!! Jason |

I'm also debating on whether or not to "weather" the body with a dark grey wash. I think I'll try this out on a piece of some scrap toy and see how the "gum drop" purple looks with a weathered look.

Dude, I love that shade of purple for the Sky Crane. I went with a light purple, but I look yours more!
