The Skystriker shell I bought from some estate auction on Ebay came in the mail Tuesday. I opened it up and found it to be a little better than what it looked like in the pictures. It also had a little more parts than I thought since they didn't list what was really still left on the body. The body had no screws and is missing many parts. It left me with all three wheels and some clips, two engine covers, and two turbines. It didn't have a rubber nose.
The new body is very clean and seems to had just two stickers on it which the minor residue came right off when I gave it a nice warm bath with dish soap and wash it. There is a black and red paint in one of the wings which needs to be sanded cleaned. The body is perfect to do the Acid Storm and also it donated parts to fix my good Skystrikers. I decided today to move ahead and cut the gun off the nose. I also cut the two small fins above the turbine shafts. It has such a nice smooth look now. I managed to cut off the gun and the fins really nice so there were very level to the body. After that I did some putty and sanding to finish it. I have tiny bit more to sand to make it perfect, but I should have that done in the next 20 minutes. So this is now the official Skystriker 1983 I using to make the Acid Storm Transformers Crossover. Here is a quick peak at the new clean look for the nose. I like how it's coming along now. The only last body mod on the top shell of the body will be to drill some little holes in the engine for some fiber optics. The lower body is going to be my next big task. I'm going to cut off the front missile hangers. Then I found some Tomcat Landing Gear that might work in my next big job of relocating the landing gear to the correct Tomcat area. I do want it to open and function with the wing control.

The last few days I managed to sand and do any bodywork (putty) on the upper shell. I've wet sanded and dry sanded for hours to get a more perfect top shell for when I prime it.
The good news is I ordered all my fiber optic and LED stuff last night so that should arrive late next week. I'm going to start working on the cockpit and new landing gear set up once I find the last few pieces I need. I also scored the lines on the top shell to make them a tiny bit deeper so the detail will show nice after prime and paint. I'm still a long way till I get to painting but I now at least have the top shell nicely sanded and ready. The last thing I have to do on the top shell is drill some small holes for the fiber optic. The top shell is in better shape than original. I also had to fix one area on the left side where it seemed it was dropped but I used a little heat and clamp and it bent back nicely. Little putty and sanding fixed the area. The cell phone pic is not showing the detail but the Skystriker is now a matte white which is perfect for primer to seal on the shell. |

So after days of sanding and doing bodywork on the upper shell and wings I have now moved onto the lower shell. The upper shell and wings are now in a 98% sanded for primer ready.
The good news is the L.E.D. and Fiber Optics I need for my design showed up today. I'll need to get a few things at the local store so I can start building the system that I have designed for the project. I went ahead today and cut off the front missile hangers on the lower shell. I want to sand the bottom shell so I can get a lot of areas ready that I won't be touching on any mods. The only thing I'm going to do it change the landing system which will be my biggest task. I still have other custom parts to make for this and I still need to make the rear tail fins. I figure this boring sanding and bodywork is getting me closer to paint. More progress to come. |

So I've managed to get a few more steps done today. I worked on the bottom shell. I cut out the new front wheel flaps. I also cut off the Drop Fuel Tank holder on the middle of the shell. I Plan to make a custom mounting system for the 4 Phoenix Missiles. I then proceeded to cut off the missile holders under the turbine shaft. I plan to make two custom drop tanks to fit more snug under the turbine area. Plus I figure with the new wheel location the Skystriker will be lower so I need clearance.
I also sanded the entire lower shell with 120 grit three times over. I then moved to 320 grit, did some putty work. My next big task is cutting the new rear wheel bays out. I'm waiting to be able to buy the wheel kit I want. So that will be in a week or two before I can get into that. I started to get the idea moving and get the paint prep work done also while I wait to buy the supplies I need for this build. I plan to make a custom piece to fill the old front wheel hole. I'll get to that next just to get the piece ready to mold and cast. I plan on making a piece that will fill the entire hole and can be glued. Then I'll putty the lines in. That's it for now. Little update: The ACID Storm project is moving a little more today. I made the fill plates for the front and rear wheels. These pieces will be molded and cast in resin for a more stronger support. I made them to glue really good into the body shell. The putty work, body work, and sanding will come later. I just had to get the pieces made so I can cast them.
I also took a drop tank that was original but broken from my parts bin and filled and sanded it nicer. I'm going to use round rod styrene for the connection to the shell. This part I will mold. The lower rear air spoiler fin I'm not done yet. I have some measurements to get down better to fit nicer. I also have to do the detail and sand it before it will be another part done ready to cast. Once I finish up the last little few things on these parts I'm going to move ahead and make the rack system to put the 4 Phoenix missiles on. I'm still waiting for the stuff I need to start making the new landing gear system. Last edited by CanzoEmpyrean; 03-07-2016 at 12:55 AM.. |

Okay so I finished the drop tank and I'm going to mold and cast that. I'm jumping on the last weapons system for the Acid Storm build. I'm going to make the rack system for the four Phoenix missiles. I want it to have the F-14 look with the two drop tanks and four Phoenix missiles under her belly. I'm going to design it out of clay instead of using styrene.
I'm also working on the rear lower air fin behind the drop tank since now I can test fittings and get better measurements. After this challenge is done I'm going to hopefully be able to move on to the landing gear or cockpit. I still have much fabrication to do. I need to make rear tail fins and create a really fitting and cool cockpit that can work with the figures. I also have a bunch of little things to make that I'm adding to this build. Stay Tuned! |
