I finally got my holy grail for a Cobra custom...the Dino Hunters Sky-Lifter Helicopter. I searched high and low for this chopper that was discontinued back in 2005, with no luck. Nothing on the eBay, or any of the overseas stores. I was fortunate that someone in the FB G.I. Joe Discussion group had seen me post about this vehicle, and reached out to me asking if I was interested in buying one of the two he had on hand. I jumped at the opportunity and secured it and now am starting the customizing process.
There are a few customs already done and posted here on HT, so I plan to distinguish mine a bit from the others. I will be painting the body a light purple color, with engines and certain parts in gunship grey, as seen in the comics. I already have custom decals from Cobrastickers/Toyhax for the Skycrane customs many were making the Tomahawk into. I will be creating two Gyro-Vipers from Ret Lift-Ticket bodies and the Gyrator figure kit from Raginspoon. Stay tuned for updates over the next week of my step-by-step process!

The Dino-Hunters Sky-Lifter is a great mold and as close the comic Cobra chopper as we've ever gotten:

I debated on what type of pilots I should use. I decided on the Gyro-Vipers, who originally came with the Mamba 3-pod helicopter (only one came with the classic). I love the kits Raginspoon puts out, so I figured two would be suitable for this bird. The Retaliation Lift-Ticket body was a perfect fit as it is a flight suit.
I will be painting certain highlights on the flight suit in dark purple to match the classic figure, with the helmet in red. Gloves and shoes will be a bronze/tan color. Head will be a purple balaclava-ed sculpt from Raginspoon.

STEP 1: Pre-paint prep
Whenever repainting an entire vehicle, take it apart first. The Skycrane had around 15 screws I had to remove then I took it completely apart for painting. Most vehicle molds are split in the middle and have two halves screwed together.

Been wanting to see one of these created for a long time. I'm looking forward to seeing your version completed.

Damn, the likeness to the comic is pretty close. This is going to be a great custom!
