I finally got around this past weekend to start my project on making the Decepticon Seekers from the new Skystriker that was recently released.
So far, I have Thundercracker and Skywarp started, and my own Starscream (not SDCC) will be started shortly. I haven't decided on if I will try to make Dirge, Ramjet, and Thrust since they will take some modifications and not just be repaints. Below is what I have done so far. I still have to paint in the silver intakes, and add some clear coat so the paint doesn't scratch off. I haven't decided if I want to detail the jets (cockpit, engines, weathering) or leave them as is and look like production made toys. I also haven't decided if I should try to paint on the striping or wait and see if CobraStickers.com will make some soon. Hope you all like them so far. Recipe: Skystriker Krylon spray paints (Navy Blue, Black, Grape) Tamiya Clear Yellow (canopy) Silver intakes, decals and clear coat hopefully being applied this weekend. What did you use on the windshields? and ya got a lot of intracate pin stripping detail to do still
I would leave em like they were right off the comicbook/cartoon tv screen fresh, the realistic weatehring effects put them in a real world and they really are not real if you get what I am getting at. Keep em true to where they came from toys! |

I think it's pretty funny that people could have been doing this since 1984 but it took SDCC 2011 to make them think of it.
Doesn't anybody have an imagination anymore? Hasbro has to do it first? Nobody can think of it on their own? So am I the only one that thought of painting a Skystriker as Darkwing, a Ghoststriker as Dreadwind, a Matchbox Veritech as Jetfire, a Dragonfly as Whirl & a Vamp II as Roadbuster??? |

Awesome work man! Don't for get acid storm sun storm and dirge! Steelgrave I'm sure others have thought about it before dude but skystrikers aren't cheap or easy to obtain. With the new ones you can go to the store and pluck one off the shelf.

My only critique is that you may consider painting the exhaust cones on Skywarp purple as well per the following picture:
Skywarp - Toy Gallery - Photo #8 Otherwise, great start! I'm pretty anxious to get around to this too, but I plan to get SDCC Starscream as reference and want to wait in hopes Cobrastickers gets around to Thundercracker and Skywarp so I can see how best to coordinate paint and decals. I'm thinking I might go ahead and paint Skywarp's nose purple as it was in some versions of the toy. I've already got the Sky Striker I'm going to customize into Thundercracker, and I'm pairing him with Destro. A Skywarp will go with Baroness. Too bad there is no 1:18 scale Transformers Shockwave for either of them. Quote:

Great work, I would find scans of the SDCC sticker sheet and manipulate the colors in photoshop for easy and cheap decals. If you need a link hit me up.

Thanks for the comments guys.
CrimsonGuard101 - I airbrushed a Tamiya Color acrylic clear yellow (X-24) on the canopies (inside the canopy). Tamiya America Item #81524 | Acrylic Mini X-24 Clear Yellow - 10ml Bottle KP Viper - I thought about painting the exhaust the purple, but it didn't look right to me (even though the toys have it). And I was basing this paint scheme more on the masterpiece Skywarp - Wal Mart Masterpiece Skywarp in-hand Images - Transformers News - TFW2005 Ska_lives - great idea on the sticker sheet. I have Photoshop and it wouldn't take much to alter the colors. So where can I find a scan of that As far as why I am modding these now, like others have mentioned - price and availability. For the cost of one vintage SkyStriker, I was able to get 2 of the new ones and all the paint. Why search Ebay when I can run to Target and buy a few now. The other reason is the look of the new SkyStriker. The Seekers are depicted as F-15's. F-15's are single pilot fixed wing jets. While the SkyStrikers are in reality F-14's, the new SkyStriker looks more like a combination of the two - thus making the conversions look more like the Seekers. Now if I could find some F-15's that are reasonably priced, I would do the conversions with them. |
