I am a big fan of customizing our Joes- making them our own... yet something has occurred to me recently...
The "cheesy" Joes that many of us mock might actually be what gave GI JOE the flavor that attracted us as kids. Even if we don't look back so fondly on them now, I can remember as a kid thinking Airtight was bad-a$$. I thought Sci-Fi's neon green was wicked- it was my fave color at the time. Blowtorch with his crazy bright yellow and red was much more visually interesting than the less-loud Barbeque. My POINT being- most of the customs I see these days are Special-Forces types in realistic camo or jet-black ninja suits. And they look great. Don't get me wrong- there really is a lot of great work out here... I just wonder if we would have like GI Joe as much as kids if Hasbro had stuck to the realistic and eschewed the bright and colorful, or maybe left out the more fictionalized characters like Croc Master, Dr. Mindbender, all the Ninjas, Raptor, etc.... What do you guys think? DO we need to preserve the cheesiness to keep the Spirit of GI Joe alive? |

God gave GI Joe to you, gave GI Joe to you, gave GI Jo-hooooe to everyone!
It's whatever you want it to be. I like both.

In retrospect, they were cheesy. But back in the day, they were cool. I think its a generational thing. 10-20 years from now people will be making fun of special forces/realistic deco. Only one thing stays the same, black ninjas are always cool.

G.I. Joe will always be that we had in the 80's. The characterization, colors and all. And even in these days when ultra-realistic modifications are so common and well done, the original style is what customizers trying to mix with with newer stuff . So yes, in some way it can be important to preserve it.

Blowtorch was My first Joe, so I completely understand where you're coming from. Children love obscurity when it comes to their toys.

I think you are right. As kids we loved the crazy characters and bright colors. I know I did. So yeah they should throw some of that in there too sometimes to keep the kids entertained.

Thanks guys, glad to see I'm not the only one.
I look at the people I'm with over here in Iraq and from 20 feet away you can't tell them apart. I think that's the problem with the trend towards more uniform uniforms- at 1/18th scale they end up being indistinguishable- a good thing on a battlefield but not in an imagination or cartoon or comic. This brings up another question- if the troops all look the same and they're unacting action figures, and nowadays you can arm and equip them however you want.... do they exist as characters anymore? Are they less deep and more one-dimensional because of it? |
