I would stick with a 2 part epoxy like Kneedatite (greenstuff) ProCreate or Aves epoxy/Magic Sculpt. Let me know if you are unfamiliar with these products.

Have you tried casting latex with this method? I've got a hypothesis floating around in my head.

Sort of, if you are talking about RTV molding compound I do have some "drop molds" which are one piece rubber molds for getting that high detail but the problem is that I do not have a pressure caster to remove the air bubbles. The smaller the piece the easier it is to get bad castings it seems. I use a pin or needle to help stir or knock out the bubbles after the resin has been poured into the mold but this doesn't always work. Pressure casters really help getting rid of that as it crushes all the bubbles down to nearly nothing but those cost a bit of money. You can make one primarily out of an old pressure cooker and air compressor but I just don't have the time to do it.

Oh that is awesome. How big of a piece do you think you could mold with that? Heads? Because that would be cool.

Hmmmm... I don't know, I may be getting some soon so I can give the 2 part press mold a try. One of the problems with that though is that normally, 2 part molds have dents, grooves and stuff like that put into one side so that when you put the two haves together they don't slide. Less chance of a mold line in other words. It may take some creative work with the Instant Mold to pull off a successful 2 part mold, not only that but you would have to wait for the putty to dry entirely (about 2-3 hours) before demolding it. You could take face impressions then sculpt the rest or add it to an existing head, that might work better then an entire head mold.

Thanks, I always wonder about that sort of thing. Anywhere you go online they make molding and casting seem easier than baking cookies. They never mention the little things, like bubbles.
The reason I'm asking is I'm sick of overcoats and harnesses that have no flexibility at all. I'm going to try to use someone I know that works in makeup effects in Hollywood to find something a little better. |

Smooth-On, Inc. - Mold Making & Casting Materials Rubber, Plastic, Lifecasting, and More They may have the type of casting material you are needing. If you are interested have a PDF for making your own pressure chamber as well as a 4 page (with pictures) how-to on making 2 part molds that was taken and translated from a hobby Japan magazine I can send your way.
