There is a ton tutorials linked in post #1
>http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...iscussion.html It's OK to sketch out your ideas first but don't use it as an excuse to hold off starting a project. I know if I think about it too long I end up starting it a lot later than I thought I would. Some things I just start, with a basic idea, and just go from there and see what comes of it.

I agree with everything TTT just said. There are many ways to go about starting a custom. First step is to imagine what you want, then pick out the base figure you want to use to make the custom. It's your creation and there is no wrong way to do it. Just have fun and be prepared to make mistakes, we all did and still do. Good luck bro!

Best to not get too ambitious when you start. Start off with a big pile of parts, and start mixing. Let the available pieces dictate the final result, instead of the other way around. You might be surprised by what you come up with.

Yup, gotta agree with all of the above. I always sketch stuff out first just to get ideas flowin', but once I get the basic idea a big ol' pile of parts, and some mixing and matching really is the best way to go. And good paints are a must, stay away from enamels too, acrylics all the way......except for maybe a detail here and there.

I dont ever sketch things out. I just have a way of knowing what part combinations will look best in my head. But you gotta have great paints like Testors Model Master or Tamyia or even Games Workshop.
You gotta start small and work your way up. And realize that you will likely mess up a figure or two or more before you make something you really think looks great. Main tip I can give you on painting is Use as small a brush as you can and as thin of paint as you can. Multiple coats of thin paint looks far better than one thick coat.

Some random thoughts:
Three words: Practice, practice, practice. If you have any old figures laying around, I suggest you start with those. Get used to painting, use different brushes and know that not every color applies the same way. Take your time. I've destroyed more than one custom because I tried to rush things. OB
