Hey folks, I have read mixed reviews on Krylon Fusion. Some say it does not work as advertised, for example, does not bond with plastic on the molecular level. Anyways I wanted to know if there are any good acrylic alternatives. I'm not a fan of working with enamel. I am used to acrylic. I use the trusty brush but I figure for a vehicle, maybe I might be better off with spray-paint.

Krylon Fusion works nice, but it has let me down on a few occasions. It won't bond with the slicker plastics like the tailfins of the 25th Conquest X-30, or the tailfin of the helicopter from the Rhino. I've resorted to "taping" it off with Post-Its. The glue is weak enough to not pull the paint with the covering.
As far as paints go, I have been EXTREMELY pleased with OSH paint. It's store brand and the cheapest of what I've seen. In addition, the OSH brand flat black is even BETTER than the Krylon flat black. Krylon still comes out a bit too shiny to me, but the OSH brand is a nice flat black. I've also found that the enamels stick better but the acrylics are easier to work with and less messy. Tamiya works great for acrylics and Model Master works great for enamels. Try it out. Let me know what you think!

Best acrylic sprays that I know of are Tamiya and Gamesworkshop(only comes in black, white & clear).
Plasti-kote is another good one but it's an acrylic enamel(if that makes any sense). Worst thing about "Fusion" is if you go outside the re-coat times the paint develops heavy cracks. As long as you use light mist coats to start and build up layers from there even an enamel will work with great results, for vehicles enamel is actually preferred by most. As long as you don't spray any soft plastic, acrylic & enamel both work great on vehicles. Even spraying down an enamel base coat you can still brush on details with acrylics. In my spray paint tut. I spray some TF Alts. the red Mazda was sprayed with Wal-Mart Auto primer and Wal-Mart generic enamel(Color-Place). TTT's Spray Paint Basics Tutorial As noted in my tut. environmental conditions are a common factor in ruining spray jobs, a warm/hot dry day with no humidity or wind is ideal. Excess cold & humidity will not allow the spray to apply properly/ideally.

I am not a seasoned customizer by any means, but I love Tamiya paints. Their spray primer is fantastic. I've loved the results so far of the custom Joe vehicle I'm making, and I've used Tamiya for years on my Minimates customs.
To be honest, once you start spraying acrylics you will never want to go back to the brush. Tamiya comes in spray cans. I bought an air compressor and an airbrush so I could spray Games Workshop acrylics. The coats are so even and brush-stroke-less that they look production quality. And you can apply such a thin coat that joint rub isn't a concern. Keep us posted on what you end up trying! |

for the slicker plastic, try to sand it with some high number sand paper, like in the 100's, 220 , well i would go higher than 220, but you get my point. and clean the plastic, i read once on the back of a fusion can to clean plastic with vineger. so try something in that nature after a buff.
i never jumped into painting plastic, since i paint for a living and don't believe plastic can actually be painted. well anything can be painted, but i don't believe the results will have durability. i never wanted to just open a toy up to try and experiment and have to waste money and ruin a toy. i did use bonding primer cut it down and sprayed it out a preval sprayer, the primer bonded, but i never finished the project lol.. |

Just a small detail on some paints, I used Tamiya and Krylon sprays recently I also used Humbrol which is also good in my opinion. I repainted a S6 red hiss with success using it. And I also used it in a few figures.
Normally I use Fusion on vehicles. Tamiaya is good because it gives very thin coats so it is perfect for the articullations since it won't rub off at least in some cases. However I've been noticing that in soft plastic Tamiaya tends to become sticky with time unless you varnish off course.

At Testors' site, I found a spray paint set that had an attachment to their regular bottle paint. Is that what you guys were talking about, or are there actual cans of spray paint that they sell at stores?
In the future I may be tackling an F-22, but I figured a spray can would do better than hand painting it with the trusty brushes, especially with pre-shading. |
