Styrene plastic can be found at hobby shops, or online hobby shops. The cloth I use is Lego micro-canvas, used for ship sails.

So. I used this thread to make a couple swords tonight and had some revelations:
1.) styrene is not tough stuff. It is actually kind of flimsy and slightly difficult to work with. Until I wanted to do the detail on the handle, then it was a tough SOB. 2.) even when done poorly, these can look freaking cool. My skills are severely lacking and I couldn't center the hand guard to save my life. But they still look pretty awesome. 3.) this is fun. I happened to be in a train shop looking for paints when I found a giant rack of styrene strips in various sizes. I was pretty stoked. It certainly isn't as rigid as I expected and I was afraid that it was going to be too flimsy, but my fears appear to be unwarranted so far. Thanks for this! |

No problem, Jay. Yes, styrene can be a little flimsy when making more proportioned (scaled) blades. This is exactly why Hasbro makes swords on the thick side. As an adult collector/customizer though, you shouldn't have any problems... unless you actually try to stick another fig with your newly made sword. Not advised.
