Best way to remove old decals from a vehicle?

I'm looking at buying a small lot of vehicles that contains a near-complete VAMP and Stinger jeeps to try my hand at customizing.

Both have their decals applied...what is the best and safest way at removing the decals and the sticky residue. I'm familiar w/ GooGone, but I wasn't sure if that would damage the plastic or not.

Also, does anyone know if the wheels and tires seperate on these jeeps or will I just have to tape over the tire portion to paint the wheels?

just pull of the decals, I use testors paint thinner and a q-tip, just scrub till the residue comes off. As for the GooGone, I've had a bad experience were it softened the plastic.

do not use goo-gone!

it makes the plastic soft and dull. believe it or not, spit works well in combination of friction.

try it..

Thanks guys from the recommendations...I'll try both the paint thinner and a little spit!

My thoughts on the subject EXACTLY!

GooGone is the Devil when it comes to plastic...

As for the wheels seperating, unfortunately, my good man, it would be better if you taped over them ;)

I haven't had problems with goo gone....but I work quick with it..get it on and get it off quick.

Sometimes rubbing alchohol works.

Either way...no matter what you use, remember...if it will take the decal off, chances are it will harm the plastic also....so work fast and clean it off quick.

lighter fluid works good for removing glue residue and then a good soap and water wash.
lighter fluid won't melt or distort the plastic. I would avoid smoking while performing this.... HA HA.

Wow, old sticker residue doesn't want to come off easy. I didn't have any alcohol or lighter fluid handy this evening, so I just used a dull blade and a lot of hot water and I got the majority of the residue off the VAMP junker I recently picked up.

Hopefully everything will turn out alright, but since this is my first attempt at a custom job I'm just enjoying trying my hand at it. I've got 2 other items lined up next if all goes well...
